Leaf drawing

Transcript of Leaf drawing video

Once you've made a leaf rubbing of the underside of your leaf it's really cool to do a drawing of the other side. So first of all run your finger down it and have a feel for the the main line of the leaf then draw that in. Next will be um the shape of the leaf. So follow it down. Maybe your leaf has got bite marks in it from animals. Maybe it's got tears or imperfections. Maybe the sides of your leaf are jagged. Maybe they're smooth like this leaf. Maybe they have little hairs on them. Maybe they're soft. Maybe they're hard. You can show this through your drawing. So draw the shape of your leaf in. So they're your main things that you first need. Then you can look at the any holes, any marks. Here there's um bite marks again. Perhaps there's been eggs laid on it. And now I'm drawing in the veins. Unlike the leaf rubbing these are not exact. The leaf rubbing is more like a tracing. These are your perception of what you're drawing. And don't worry it doesn't have to be perfect. It's fine. Just a general sort of idea. Okay once you've got the features of your leaf in the main details then you can perhaps look for the dark and the light areas. If you're not using colour it's probably useful to shade in your dark areas so you can recognize the marks that they are and then here you can see that the vein, the middle vein of the leaf is quite yellow so the actual leaf surface around it is a bit darker so that's why I'm shading it in softly using the side of the pencil here.
