All children starting Kindergarten in NSW public schools will take part in the Best Start Kindergarten Assessment. This one-on-one assessment helps teachers gather valuable information about each child’s early literacy and numeracy skills at the beginning of the school year. It provides teachers with a clear understanding of what each student knows and can do, allowing them to tailor their teaching to meet individual learning needs right from the start.
The assessment is conducted by the classroom teacher and usually takes no longer than 45 minutes to complete. It is carried out at school during the first few weeks of Term 1. The process is designed to be relaxed and engaging, helping students feel comfortable in their new school setting while giving teachers useful insights to support a successful transition to school.
