The Mosman High School GAT Futsal Development Program aims to build junior futsal and football skills to competitive NSW Interschool Competition levels. In 2015, two Mosman High GAT Futsal teams progressed through the regional competition to the NSR State Futsal Championships. In 2025, a Year 8 boys team made it into the State Tournament, and the girls reached 3rd place.
Futsal, ‘indoor football,’ or ‘five-a-side,’ is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, is played in over 100 countries, and requires only limited space. The sport is an excellent skill developer, demanding quick reflexes, fast decision-making, and accurate passing. Games are fast-paced, with players receiving more touches than in traditional eleven-a-side soccer. This allows for maximum game time for players whilst strengthening teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. The use of a smaller, heavier ball encourages better control and predominantly floor passing to work around defenders.
The program is open to boys and girls in years 7-12. Athletes are selected at trial and commence squad training once a week under the supervision of qualified futsal coaches.
Due to the new grounds on school property, the enclosed rooftop court has been allocated for futsal training, allowing for maximised training time. In addition, proper futsal goals are stationed on this court for realistic game training.
The squads will compete in local NBFA Summer Futsal Competitions. The squad also feeds into the NSW Schools Futsal Championship and the NSW Knock Out soccer competition. Alongside these tournaments, there are weekly afternoon games in Term 4 done in a proper competition format, giving teams a goal to reach throughout the season.
