Our goal is to get as many people in the Braidwood community using Nature Mapr as possible.
We believe that this will help our community work towards SDG 15 Life on Land by making them aware of flora and fauna around Braidwood and will help scientists by giving them more information about where different flora and fauna are.
We split up into groups, and each group worked on its own project. The aim is to target different groups in the community to get them involved in using Nature Mapr. For citizen science to work its best, it needs lots of citizens to be involved in it. We heard that not many people in Braidwood knew about Nature Mapr and saw that there was not much data
Some students worked in groups to write articles for the school website and newsletter and local newspaper.
The aim of these articles was to encourage our parents and members of the community to get Nature Mapr on their phones and to start using it.
We used our best persuasive language to convince our community that they should download the app and start using it. We explained why it was important and told them how to go about getting the app onto their phone and using it.
One group of students decided that other than everyone in 5/6 L, the BCS students most likely to love Nature Mapr would be the high school Biology class, because Biology is all about living things.
We made a presentation explaining what Nature Mapr was and why we think it's important. Then we went to a Biology lesson and talked to the class. We told them to download the app and to start taking photos.
We hope to take the Biology students to Monkittee Creek soon so that they can take photos of the flora and fauna they find and upload it to Nature Mapr.
One group decided that a video was a great way to engage the community and explain how to use the Nature Mapr app.
We worked together to write a script and plan a storyboard for the video and then to learn our lines and to record and make the video.
We wanted to make a video to show younger kids how to use Nature Mapr. Citizen science is fun for kids and its good for them to get involved. A video is better for kids to understand than a newspaper article.
