STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) approach to learning
In English, Stage 2 students will explore engaging texts, including The Kindness Project by Deborah Abela and Bindi by Kirli Saunders, to deepen their understanding of character, setting, plot and theme. They will practise comprehension strategies such as making inferences and summarising, and create their own narratives with a clear beginning, problem and resolution. Students will also experiment with imagery, figurative language and poetry to enhance their writing.
Learners will investigate different text types and how purpose and audience influence writing. They will explore persuasive techniques, analyse text structure, and plan, draft and revise informative and persuasive pieces.
Daily phonics (SPELD), guided reading and differentiated literacy groups will strengthen decoding, fluency and comprehension. Students will continue developing NSW Foundation style handwriting and keyboarding skills.
In Stage 2 Mathematics, students build strong foundations in number by working with larger numbers and developing efficient strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They explore fractions and decimals, deepen their understanding of place value, and apply mathematical reasoning to solve problems.
Students also investigate measurement (length, area, volume, mass and time), explore 2D and 3D shapes, and develop their understanding of angles and symmetry. In statistics and probability, they collect and interpret data and describe the likelihood of everyday events.
Teaching follows the NSW Mathematics Syllabus (2023/2024) and is delivered through an explicit instruction approach (“I do, We do, You do”). Concepts are clearly modelled, practised with guidance, and then applied independently. Regular review and ongoing assessment ensure students are supported and challenged at the right level, while building confidence, accuracy and fluency in mathematics.
Science and Technology
In Stage 2, students will explore Earth and space, learning about the Sun, gravity, and how energy supports life. They will model Earth’s movement, investigate the night sky, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledges, and represent their learning through diagrams, models, and explanations. In Design and Digital Technologies, students will plan, build, test, and evaluate models, explore how products meet user needs and investigate how food and clothing are produced. They will also use digital tools to research, share information, collaborate and represent data.
History & Geography:
In HSIE, students will explore caring for Australia’s environments and how people share responsibility for protecting places. They will investigate how places are organised, compare sustainability practices, and learn how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have cared for Country. Students will also study the British penal colony at Sydney Cove, examining colonisation, the First Fleet, and its impact on the Gadigal People, while developing skills in sequencing events, explaining cause and effect, and communicating their understanding of the past.
In PDHPE, students develop the knowledge and skills to support their health, wellbeing and active lifestyles. They learn about building positive relationships, showing respect and empathy, managing emotions, and making safe and responsible choices. Students explore strategies to stay healthy, including nutrition, physical activity and personal safety, and participate in a range of games and movement activities that develop teamwork, coordination and confidence. Our approach is supported by the Grow Your Mind program, which helps students understand how their brain works and how they can strengthen it through positive habits. Students learn about resilience, gratitude, mindfulness and emotional regulation, and are encouraged to use helpful “brain strategies” when facing challenges. This supports a growth mindset, empowering students to build confidence, persistence and strong mental wellbeing both at school and beyond.
PE: Students will participate in a weekly sports program to develop fundamental movement skills.
In Creative Arts, students explore and express ideas through Visual Arts, Music, Drama and Dance. They experiment with a range of materials, techniques and processes to create artworks that communicate meaning and reflect their experiences, imagination and the world around them.
Students learn to sing, play and listen to music, developing an understanding of rhythm, pitch and structure. In Drama and Dance, they use movement, voice and expression to tell stories, explore characters and share ideas. Students also view and respond to a variety of artworks and performances, discussing how artists use different elements to convey meaning.
Through Creative Arts, students build confidence, collaboration skills and creativity while developing an appreciation for diverse cultures, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives.
The library learning program focuses on developing information literacy skills, digital citizenship and encouraging students to read for enjoyment. Students will read and talk about books from a range of different authors, about diverse topics.
In Spanish lessons with Ms Troncoso, students will be reviewing greetings, emotions and some grammatical features of the language.
