Turia Pitt

Author: Darci Berry

Six years have now past since the inpsiring Turia Pitt risked her life to save others in a bush fire in the Kimberleys, West Australia. Now 30, Turia is a motivational speaker, humanitarian, author, athlete and mining engineer. Competing in an ultra marathon in 2011 Turia headed into the race as any person would, a mix of nerves and excitement. At only 24 years old during the ultra marathon Turia suffered burns to 64% of her body. For the next 2 years Turia had to wear a full body compression suit including a mask to help her body recover. Since the incident happened Turia has undergone 200 surgeries. “It’s something I just have to accept, it’s a part of my life now. For me, it’s just like doing house work or washing the car. It’s something that I have to do,” Turia quoted in an interview with the Daily Telegraph. Now Turia has done what seems to many unimaginable, she has rebuilt her life and is back to competing in triathlons and other sporting events.

Since the accident Turia has already competed in:

  • Ironman Triathlon in Port Macquarie (42.2km run after swimming 3.8km and cycling 180km)
  • Walk the Kakoda track as an ambassador for the charity interplast
  • Hawaii Ironman event (3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42.2km marathon run)

What strikes me most about Turia Pitt is her desire to not stop going no matter what gets put in her way and to never give up. She could haven given up and stayed in bed all day but she chose not to. She chose to complete some of the hardest races on the planet. She makes me feel like anything is possible and to never give up. Turia Pitt inspires me and so many people in the world.
