Congratulations to all students for reaching this milestone in their education journey. I am genuinely excited that students now get to choose an entire pattern of study that represents their interests and their strengths. While it is a time to think seriously about your choices as you pursue the HSC credential or other transition to employment pathways, it is also wise to keep options open in case you are unsure of your exit destination. What will I do when I leave? Will I go to University? What sort of job would I enjoy? All these questions can be quite daunting and I want to make the point that you do not have to have all the answers at this stage. It is your responsibility, however, to begin thinking about it. Discuss ideas with your family and make sure you engage with the teachers and careers adviser here at school to start figuring it out.
I ask students to keep the following tips in mind when selecting their elective courses for Years 11 and 12:
Engage with the resources provided here on this website.
Read the Subject Selection Booklet carefully.
Do not choose a subject just because your friends are doing it.
Do not choose a subject based solely on who is, was or might be teaching the course next year - it might all change.
Speak to your teachers who know you and the Head Teachers about your choices.
Speak to students who actually do or have done those subjects.
Do what you enjoy and the results will come.
Successful students in Stage 6 attend school every day, and complete all assigned work to the best of their abilities. This helps them to have a wider range of choices at the end of their schooling journey. Best of luck with the selection process and please come and see me if you need any assistance.
Regards,
Brent Waters - Deputy Principal.
