What’s Been Happening in 5/6 Bertie Beetle?
It’s been a busy and engaging term in 5/6 Bertie Beetle, with students diving into creative projects, thoughtful discussions, and some great reading. In Creative Arts, we’ve been exploring the work of ceramic artist Amy Brummond. After researching her style and techniques, students designed and shaped their own pinch pots, using a variety of textures and patterns. They’re now in the final stages of painting their creations – we can’t wait to see how they turn out! In writing, we’ve focused on Australia’s journey to Federation. Students have investigated why Federation was needed, how our systems of government were formed, and the significance of this moment in our history. The class has shown a real interest in the topic, leading to some thoughtful and insightful discussions. In reading, we’ve been working through Holes by Louis Sachar – a novel full of mystery and layered storytelling. The class has really enjoyed getting to know the characters and uncovering the plot twists. We’re looking forward to watching the film soon to round off the unit.
It’s been a fantastic term of learning, creativity, and connection!

Term 2 in 5/6 Kit Kat
This term in 5/6 Kit Kat, we have been extremely lucky having Mr Lewis as our student teacher. He has been teaching us drama, poetry and many other subjects.
Our general topic this term for literacy has been government. We have been writing about the first steps to government, how our country developed through federation, and how our system of government works. We have also been enjoying reading Holes by Louis Sachar, which is a fun book filled with mystery, excitement and scenes that are easy to picture in your head. We have a Holes booklet which is filled with questions about the chapters we have read. In morning routine we have been learning about what types of government there are, important voices in government, the calendar, and many more things.
This term we have done a few projects including Game Changer, a project on solving a problem in society ensuring a sustainable future for all. Another project we have been working on is our pottery. We had to make a slideshow on Amy Brummond, the person we are basing our artworks on. Amy was a clay enthusiast and has created lots of cups, mugs and other ceramics. We have made pots out of air-dry clay, and painted them with watercolour, and acrylic paint. We have also been doing drama project. We had to represent important people in the history of our government. There is also a competition Stage Three has entered, where you have to create a video about what democracy means to you. We have been working hard on it writing scripts and shooting scenes to finish these. Some are included below.
