Wood chip mulch:
It is added over a newspaper base. Mulches should be kept away from the trunk to prevent collar rot.
Roundup:
A chemical/herbicide (with an active ingredient Glyphosate) that interferes with the action of a plant enzyme and kills the plant over a period of 1-2 days. Weeds are spot sprayed and red dye is added so the chemical can be easily spotted.
Gazania
It is no longer used at the base of the tree, but is still found at the edges of the orchard.
It is used as a living mulch which increases organic matter and promote populations of micro and macro organisms in the soil. It effectively competes with weeds.
