Teacher instruction and guidance
All of the workshop activities in these resources are designed to be led by your teacher. Before beginning the activities, ask your teacher for guidance. You should also seek regular feedback from your teacher throughout each activity.
Teacher's notes for this resource
All workshop activities are designed to be accessed by students but require teachers to lead these activities. This resource is not a unit of work, but rather a collection of suggested activities and resources that compliment the study of the prescribed plays for Topic 2: Contemporary Australian Theatre Practice.
Recommended reading and Cultural Safety
The Teaching First Nations Culture and Concepts in the Drama Class Room: Advice for Teachers in Victorian Schools document available from the Ilbijerri Theatre Company's education webpage. This document is particularly relevant to Stolen as it has been shaped by feedback from Ilbijerri Theatre Company – the same theatre company that first helped develop and stage Stolen.
The associated activity with this reading on the Respectful learning page will need to be adjusted for class ability. Some classes may benefit from being provided with a summary of this reading, or other classes may wish to assign the reading to groups and report back with summaries.
It is important that teachers consider the learning context for students when engaging with this text and what is culturally respectful, safe and appropriate. If students are reluctant to engage with material, then teachers should consider appropriate ways to model respectful, safe and appropriate approaches. This modelling should be based on advice in line with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander principles and protocols and local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Community consultation, where appropriate.
Audience of resource
This resource is written with students as the primary audience. This is to allow teachers to link directly to activity instructions or supplement existing programs with material.
Activity sequence
Teachers are encouraged to make adjustments to the activities presented on this site and moderate content where appropriate for student and class needs. Where activities build on prior knowledge from a previous activity, this will usually be noted in the 'Learning intention' for that activity.
Pacing of content
There are a range of activities that may take longer than the allotted time in these resources. Teachers should use their discretion to decide what the class completes and the time spent on activities in relation to student need and ability.
