Memory game
Introduction
This is a very simple game and one already played by many primary school students. It works for any subject or topic that requires some memorising such as Math, Music or LOTE. Making it into a digital version has a few advantages:
- There is no laminating!
- It is easy to make a different version for every child or to make small changes every day.
- You can use Google Classroom to assign different version to different students, no one needs to know who has a different file if they all look the same.
- Students can play it on a tablet in pairs as part of rotating activities (if they have the Google Slides app installed).
Activity
Step 1. Open the game on your device. Logged into your Google account, go to File and choose the Make a copy option so that you do not edit the original template.
Step 2. Choose one person's device to use. That person needs to set the sharing of the file to Anyone with the link can edit and then add the other person's email to the sharing, so that you can both be accessing and editing the same file.
Step 3. Follow the instructions to play the game.
Step 4. Choose a theme or topic that relates to work your class will do at the beginning of next term that could use the reinforcement of this simple game.
Step 5. Move all the card images to one of the blank player slides.
Step 6. Create your own version of the game by editing the content of the text boxes. Replace the card images on top of the content.
Step 7. Make sure the share settings are set to Anyone with the link can edit and then add the other persons' email to the sharing, so that you can both be accessing and editing the same file.
Step 8. Play test your game with your partner. Do you need to make any changes?
Tips
The background was created by going to Slide and choosing Change background. I then chose to upload an image that I had created earlier in MS Paint. You could make the grid smaller to include more cards and options. Creating the grid this way means that players do not accidentally click on it or move it around.
All the content is created by typing it into simple text boxes; if you are using words or phrases you can change the font size. If you are using images like musical notes for example you might like to include them on the background image as well.
The mushroom card image was also created in MS Paint; you could also use a photo or another image, just set it to the same pixel size as your grid. I inserted the card image by uploading it once and then duplicating it until I had covered each grid space.
Equipment
Internet access, your Google account and a six sided dice (or on online dice).
