Digital Breakout EDU

Introduction

Breakout EDU is an immersive learning games platform. Games can be played with a physical kit or as a digital version online. In addition to the content knowledge needed to succeed in a specific game, all Breakout EDU games require critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication. Some digital games and a game creator are available on the Breakout EDU website but many teachers have made their own using Google Forms.

Activity

Step 1. Choose one person's device to use as the digital Breakout EDU device. You will need at least one other device to use for searching for information to answer the clues.

Step 2. Depending on whether you are in Team 1 or Team 2 follow the link in the equipment section to the correct game.

Step 3. Choose the lock you want to open first, you can click on any of them to see what the clue is and you can unlock them in any order.

Step 4. Read your chosen clue and then look at the lock information, that will give you an idea of the information you need to figure out. It could be letters, numbers, colours, or directional arrows for example.

Step 5. Work together as a team to try and unlock all the locks before the time runs out. You only have 15 mins not the 40 the website says so you might need to split up the clues.

If you don't manage the unlock all the locks today not to worry, the goal of this session is to show you how the activity works rather than win!

Equipment

Each team needs:

Internet access and a device

Team 1:

Mercury 13 game

Show Me the Code game

Teaching Notes

When using these activities with your students focus on the teamwork and collaboration needed to solve these problems.

Having a timer gives the game an element of suspense so I would not suggest removing it.
