Watch the video to learn about different types of clouds. Then go outside and try to identify clouds around your home or school.
Create a 'Cloud journal':
go outside for a few minutes everyday for a week and observe the clouds
use the Cloud Identification Chart to identify them
record the date, time, location and type of cloud
draw or take a photo of the clouds
record the details, including photos or drawings, in a notebook, digital slideshow or iBook.
What is the difference between weather and climate? Watch the video then read more at the National Centers for Environmental Information.
In your own words:
define weather
define climate
explain the difference between weather and climate.
It gets very windy on the coast near Wattamolla. Sometimes the gusts are so strong they can blow your hat off your head!
The Bureau of Meteorology is the Australian Government's official weather forecaster. They built an automatic weather station near Providential Headland on the top of a cliff. It measures wind direction and wind speed every 30 minutes. It takes extra measurements when there is a strong gust or change (of direction). All of the data is recorded on the Bureau's website.
Record the following in a Google Doc or in your school book:
Look up the weather at Wattamolla today:
What is the most recently recorded wind speed and direction?
Look at the climate data showing the mean (average) wind speed at Wattamolla:
What is the mean wind speed for the current month?
Compare today's wind speed to the mean wind speed for this month:
Are they similar or different? Explain why they may be different.
The Beaufort Wind Scale measures wind speed based on the wind's effects. For example, a category 4 wind (moderate breeze) will raise dust and loose paper and move small branches.
Go outside (or look out a window) and use the Beaufort Wind Scale to estimate wind speed. Write down (in your book or a Google Doc):
category
description
wind speed in km/h
Include a photo and/or a description of what you can see that helped you make your decision.
