Research GPS and create a presentation or report. Include the following:
What does GPS stand for?
How does GPS work?
When did GPS get set up and why?
How many GPS satellites are orbiting Earth?
How many satellites are needed to calculate position?
What is geocaching? (Geocaching Australia is a great resource)
You must seek permission from a parent or carer before creating an account or searching for a geocache.
You can use a smartphone to go geocaching. Use the map from Geocaching Australia to navigate to your suburb. Are there any geocache sites nearby?
With a parent or carer, try to find a geocache on a walk or a trip to a local park.
Discuss with a parent, carer or teacher before setting up. All sites must be in public places that are safe to access.
Think of at least five sites around your school or local area that you can mark as waypoints. Examples include:
next to a garden
on the footpath in front of a home with lots of teddy bears in the window
a sign in a park
your favourite tree
Next, think of something to do at each site. Ideas include:
take a photo
answer a question
solve a riddle
You may need to design a worksheet (paper or online) for a friend or family member to complete.
Here are two ways you can create the geocache:
Use Google MyMaps to mark the points. The slideshow includes steps to explain this.
Walk to each location (with parent/carer permission) with a smartphone. When you get to a site, drop a pin on your map. Then save each pin to a list. You can then share the list with a friend.
