The HSC course applies the knowledge and understanding of designing and producing from the Preliminary course. It involves the development and realisation of a Major Design Project, a case study of an innovation, along with the study of innovation and emerging technologies. The study of the course content is integrated with the development of a Major Design project, worth 60% of the HSC mark.
This project requires students to select and apply appropriate design, production and evaluation skills to a product, system or environment that satisfies an identified need or opportunity. The case study of an innovation requires students to identify the factors underlying the success of the innovation selected, analyse associated ethical issues and discuss its impact on Australian society.

Ecolamp is a project that explores the creative possibilities of LEDs. This technology is super efficient and very versatile. The project focuses on issues of energy use and sustainability while giving you the opportunity to develop their own creative ideas. As with most new technology designers want to find its true form. You will use a variety of idea generation techniques, such as rapid design, organic design and formation design. You will learn about light and form, and be presented with a great opportunity to invent a whole new style of lighting.

factors affecting designing and producing including:
- appropriateness of the design solution
-needs
-function
-aesthetics
-finance
-ergonomics
-work health and safety
-quality
-short-term and long-term environmental consequences
-obsolescence
-life cycle analysis
Aesthetics: Aesthetic means the pleasant, positive or artful appearance of a person or a thing. An example of the word is aesthetic is to say that a particular car is beautiful. The definition of aesthetic is being interested in how something looks and feels. An example of someone who is aesthetic might be an artist.
Function: For designers, function is the practical, getting-down-to-business part of the process of design and desktop publishing. Function is the purpose of the piece whether it is to sell, to inform or educate, to impress, or to entertain.
Anton Gerner is an Australian furniture designer whose award-winning work has been featured in a number of national publications. Gerner uses a selection of fine materials, including local and imported timber, and traditional hand tools to construct his pieces.
Anton’s work is a mixture of private one-off commissions, architectural fit-outs, batch production and exhibition work. One-off pieces and shop samples are now also stocked by a number of shops. Over the past few years a number of batch production items have also been designed and developed to be sold at wholesale directly to architects, interior designers and retail shops.
Gerner’s design philosophy is contemporary with inspiration drawn from American Shaker furniture and the Biedermeier and Art Deco periods. Clean lines and strong shapes are emphasised and fine details featured. Contrasting timbers and inlay details are also a strong design feature.

Anton developed his design skills in high school, later studying at the School of Woodcraft in Melbourne, and by working with other furniture makers early in his career. His business began with a series of small commissions, which allowed him to develop a list of clientele, acquire more equipment and eventually take on extra staff. His workshop is in East Hawthorn, Victoria. Having run a successful business for more than 20 years, Anton says his ideas are ‘developed over a long period of time’, and he is ‘obsessed’ about quality and that he is inspired by ‘any product that is made well’.
