What is a waste-free lunch?

Why might this be a good idea to pack a waste-free lunch when going on a bush walk?

Create a list of food that could be brought on the excursion.

Draw a picture of a waste-free lunch that you would be able to bring in the day. Label all of the parts of the lunch

Extension: Plan waste free lunches for the whole week!!

Going on a bushwalk

Visit the NSW National Parks website and discuss the following as a class:

  • What are the potential risks when bushwalking and what risk management strategies could you undertake, e.g. insect stings, sunburn, uneven tracks.

  • List the personal equipment needed for the fieldwork, e.g. sun hats, drinking water, wet weather gear, closed shoes, jumper etc.

The National Park's motto is 'leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photos'.

What does this motto mean?

Make a list of some ways that you could ensure that you follow this motto on your excursion.

Bushwalking Code

As a class, look at and discuss the "Tread Softly Code" shown below. Students create a poster displaying their own bushwalking code. You may like to include in your discussions;

  • how we could walk without disturbing wildlife and the environment (quietly and no sudden movements)

  • why we don’t walk with sticks

  • what we do if we see wildlife (stand still, quiet and observe)
