How do we search?
We use our web browsers such as Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome to navigate online search engines, enabling us to explore the vast World Wide Web.Â
Google remains the most commonly used search engine, however it is not the only one. Purtill (2021) explains that Google represents more than 90% of online searches worldwide. Perhaps this is by default... The options are out there and it's up to you how you choose to search.

Risks and benefits
Imoniwe (2018) encourages students to be aware of the benefits and risks associated with the use of search engines. Some of these are outlined in this image (Leeson, 2024).
Strategies
Research shows that even university students struggle to apply appropriate strategies when using online search engines (Zlatkin-Troitschanskaia et al., 2021) and it is therefore essential that you continually develop these skills throughout your schooling.
You can achieve a better search result by:
Using specific key words
Evaluating the sources
Using advanced search features such as filters and operators
Being cautious and not clicking on unfamiliar websites before checking their credibility
