The Dapto High School Chess Club is organised by our Student Support Officer, Mr Tom Pearson. Generally, this involves running trials for a knockout team early in Term 1 each year, with 4 students (plus one reserve) selected to represent the school in the NSW Junior Chess League Regional Knockout. Students also compete in the Sydney Academy of Chess local heats. The school has entered this competition for the last few years and have made it to Semi-finals each time (grand finals in 2020). This can be hosted online or at designated school sites.
We also have a number of self-motivated students who use the library space to play against their peers during recess and lunch breaks. We would like to encourage these students to continue friendly competitions and invite peers to join them in a game of Chess.
Please see Mrs MacFarlane in the Library if you are interested in setting up or leading a school-based chess competition.
Debating and Public Speaking at Dapto High School runs from within the library space, organised by Mrs MacFarlane and supported by our Debating Coach, Ms Griggs. Involvement can include in competitions that take place in school, within the Dapto Learning Community are
Students are invited to attend sessions for training during Learning Labs on Monday after school in the library. It is advised, but not compulsory to come to these sessions. If you cannot make it due to other commitments, you can still be involved in Public Speaking and Debating. No prior experience required.
Dapto High School Dungeons & Dragons Club has run since 2019, and currently does so out of our Library 'Zen Den', organised through our Student Support Officer, Mr Tom Pearson.
Dungeons & Dragons is a popular role playing game set in a classical fantasy world, where players take on the roles of a character within it and roll along with the story the dice tell. The game works with a concept called 'Theater of the Mind'.
Students involved are invited to connect on our school's official Microsoft TEAMS Channel to discuss their characters, strategy, and share ideas. Dapto High School currently runs two concurrent groups at recess and lunch, 4 days per week in the library. Students also have the opportunity to 3D print their own miniatures for use with combat encounters in the game, free, thanks to support from Mr Moore.
If you are interested in getting involved, please speak to Mr Pearson to hear more!
Happy tidings, brave adventurers!
Learning Lab runs in the library every Monday from 2.45pm - 4.15pm, and is run by Mr Batt. It is a great opportunity to work on assessments, homework and seek feedback or support from teachers or your peers. Coaching is available to support our debating and public speaking students. Afternoon tea is provided. Please pay attention to announcements on assemblies for the rare occasion that the Learning Lab is called off.
If you are interested in organising, or advertising, your student-led club on the library website, please speak to Mrs MacFarlane in the library or contact me via the 'Ask A Teacher Librarian' button. This could include book clubs, STEM, craft, etc.
Design Club: In Design club you will learn how to use 3D Design software, utilise the 3D printer and laser cutter. Explore creativity, building and get involved in school initiatives. The club will be held on Mondays and will be on the Phoenix Deck with Ms Steele supervising.
