In the last school holidays, over 180 youths competed in the Archery Youth National Championships in Canberra, in various age groups (U14 to U21) in various bow divisions.
Oliver competed in an archery discipline called Barebow - the same type of bow you see in the Olympics but without all the sights and stabilisers for aiming. This makes the bow much harder to aim and hit the targets.
In the U18 Barebow division, Oliver won a gold medal in the following events:
Target Round - 90 arrows at a 122cm target face at a distance of 60m, 50m, and 40m.
Field Event - Shoots out in the bush at 24 targets at varying distances from 5m to 50m and different sized targets ranging from 20cm, 40cm, 60cm, and 80cm.
Target 720 Round - 72 arrows shot at a 122cm target face at 50m.
He also competed in the Team Matchplay (team of 3) in a round robin elimination event at 50m, where his team came 4th. What an amazing effort!
Oliver shoots and trains with Warringah Archers (on the eastern side of the Cromer Campus Oval). All age groups can get involved with different courses to get started.
