A living room

The events in this scene could make an audience very uncomfortable as there is an element of sexual taboo within its structure. In this scene Evelyn is videotaping their love making and Adam confesses that she is dangerously close to owning him.

Logbook activity

During this activity you need to focus on the need for choices in creating objectives to pursue and tactics to employ. Actor's choices are not always apparent in the dialogue and this scene should be bold and exciting as well as psychologically and physically proactive (Cohen, 1998, pp.87-88).

  • Draw a set design for this scene. Decide where the bed, the video camera and tripod should be placed.
  • Reflect on what happens before the dialogue begins and through the use of dramatic tension.

Keep in mind the 'tension of the taboo and controversial' during the workshop of this scene and to continually ask how it might affect an audience.

  • Discuss what is said in the whipser during this segment. This whisper is again brought up at the end of the play.
  • Discuss some of the types of physical actions that complement the dialogue, such as the characters
    • Rubbing their partner's shoulders and back
    • Stroking or tousling their partner's hair
    • Playfully poking their partner with their toes,
    • Taking their partner's hand (Adapted from Cohen, 1998, p.91)

Read over the play, imagining it on the set you drew earlier. Consider how the audience would feel and write answers to the questions below.

  1. How would an audience feel at the end of this scene?
  2. Would they realise what is going on?
  3. How would you feel as an actor playing this scene?
  4. How does this scene relate to the characteristics of Black Comedy?
  5. Read over Evelyn's subtext again and discuss and how it relates to the black comic structure.
