Stella Bowerman

COVID-19 on The Ruby Princess

THE SPEECH

Speech Transcript

Good afternoon parents, guests, and teachers my name is Stella Bowerman and my GAT project is on the Ruby Princess.
The Ruby Princess is a cruise ship that is part of the Princess cruises Cruise line. But the most important and interesting thing about this ship is that it was one of the biggest contributors to COVID-19 in Australia.
I have chosen this topic because COVID is such a big problem worldwide and it is a very important issue.
My creative mode is a poster of the ship. I painted it and used the slogan ‘Dream Cruise Turned Nightmare’ to show how what happened was unexpected and that a lot less people would have been infected if they had known what was coming.
My biggest challenge in this project was choosing what I would be doing for my creative mode. I decided by looking at what other people had done before. I also talked to different people about what to do which inspired me.
This project has taught me many new skills especially research wise and I found out lots of new information. This will definitely help me in the future for doing projects and how to research.

THE CREATIVE MODE

Creative mode description

My creative mode is a painting that I have done. The painting is of the Ruby Princess Cruise ship in Sydney harbour. I used different coloured acrylic paints for the background and the ship. I used an orange sharpie for the harbour bridge.

I started by sketching the shapes with a pencil and then painting the sky and the harbour bridge. Once that was all dry I then painted the ship. Once that was all done I wrote ‘The Ruby Princess’ and ‘Dream Cruise Turned Nightmare’ on the picture frame, when that was done I put the picture in the frame and sealed it.

The slogan on the picture represents how the cruise sounded like an amazing and exciting thing but it changed to terrible and the complete opposite very quickly. It also shows how it was unexpected and there is a huge chance that it wouldn't have happened if they had known what was coming. I used the bright colours and nice setting to show just how inviting it looked and the difference to what actually happened.

I decided to do the painting because it was something different and really properly showed the huge difference. I decided on the painting by talking to different people about what to do and what I wanted my creative mode to show.

THE SELF REFLECTION

I enjoyed the gifted and talented program because it taught me many new skills that I can apply to things in the future.

I really enjoyed making my creative mode but it was quite hard for me to decide what to do. The reason for that was that I wanted to do something that would get my message across and also be intriguing.

I found the report really interesting with all the new information that I found while writing it. Finding most of the information was quite easy since coronavirus is such a current issue, the only challenge I had was making sure that all the information that I included was current and was relevant to everything that I was saying.

Because of everything that I had written in my report finding everything that I wanted to put in my speech was already there, I just had to talk more about my creative mode and my project as a whole.

The class presentation was probably my favourite part of the program. It was fun to put something together for my class and be able to teach them about my topic. It was interesting to see how they would react to what I presented and it was good to see the way my activity worked.

Overall I think I did a good job in most aspects of the Gifted and Talented program. I think the one thing I could do better is getting everything done sooner rather than later and making decisions about what to do.
