What is Country and why is it important to Aboriginal peoples?

You will be visiting a very special place, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park which is located on the lands of the GuriNgai People.
Watch an Acknowledgement of Country and discuss as a class what this means to you.
Discuss as a class about the difference between a Welcome to Country and Acknowledgment of Country. (See the teacher background information below).
Students write down why a Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement of Country is important protocol in their workbooks.
Note the local spelling of GuriNgai with a capital 'N' . This represents the men (Guri) and women (Ngai) from this area.

Locate the site you will visit (either West Head or Muogamarra) using Google Maps. Students explore the satellite map images and answer the following questions in the student workbook:
In what direction (on the compass) will you travel from your school?
What is the distance from your school to the excursion site?
What different environments might you see on the way to your excursion?
Look at the AIATSIS map of Aboriginal Australia. Zoom in on the Sydney region and locate GuriNgai (spelt Kuring-gai on the map). In their workbooks, students:
list two of GuriNgai’s neighbouring language groups.
