Subject Acceleration
Subject Acceleration
Caringbah High School is offering acceleration in HSC subjects. This means that Year 9 students can possibly study a HSC course while in Years 9 and 10, instead of a traditional Stage 5 elective, completing the HSC earlier than their peers. The courses and models of acceleration are:
Investigating Science
2026
Year 9 students will complete the Year 11 course
2027
Year 10 students will complete the HSC course and sit the HSC exam two years earlier than their peers
Mathematics Advanced
2026
Year 9 students will complete Stage 5 (Year 9 and 10) coursework in one year.
All accelerated students will be in a Mathematics class together and will also study a Mathematics elective to ensure enough hours to complete two years' of study in one.
This course is separate to the current 8MATR class that is already accelerated, 8MATR students may not apply to accelerate further.
2027
Year 10 students will complete the Preliminary HSC (Year 11) course in Mathematics Advanced.
2028
Year 11 students will complete the HSC course in Mathematics Advanced, sitting the HSC exam a year earlier than their peers.
Year 11 students will also complete the Preliminary HSC (Year 11) course in Mathematics Extension.
2029
Year 12 students will complete the HSC courses in Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2.
Students wishing to undertake an accelerated Stage 6 subject must complete a comprehensive selection process undertaken by the relevant Head Teacher in consultation with the Principal (see below - How to Apply). They must be aware that participation in the accelerated program may require attendance of lessons outside of traditional class times (usually mornings).
Usually students would only be allowed to study one accelerated subject and they must be able to demonstrate by means of an individual learning plan how participation in the course will benefit them.
Students will still be required to take two other elective subjects.

If you are considering an Accelerated course, you need to be willing to commit to it for the full course and you shouldn't be planning to opt out half way through.
No. The accelerated pattern of study for these courses needs to begin in Year 9.
You will need to place your accelerated subject as your 1ST preference. You should have a 'back-up' set of preferences in the event that your application is not successful and/or there is not sufficient interest for the subject to run.
You may apply for more than one accelerated subject, but students will only be permitted to study one accelerated subject. This ensures students are able to also maintain focus on other core subjects that are essential to successful completion of Stage 5 requirements.
