The study of Textiles develops an understanding of textiles as a creative and functional medium used to meet individual, commercial, and cultural needs. Students will explore the design process through a wide range of practical experiences and theoretical knowledge, focusing on creativity, innovation, sustainability, and ethical design practices.
Students will learn to investigate, plan, design, produce and evaluate textile items across various focus areas such as apparel, furnishings, costume design, textile arts, and non-apparel items. They will apply industry practices and develop technical skills using both traditional and emerging technologies, including the use of digital tools and sustainable production methods.
This is a project-based course where students develop a portfolio of practical textile solutions while deepening their understanding of the role of textiles in society, culture, and the environment.

Students will engage in the design process to create textile projects that solve real-world problems and meet user needs. They will work individually and collaboratively to research trends, test materials, develop patterns, and construct quality textile items. Through critical and creative thinking, students will evaluate the social, environmental, and aesthetic impacts of their design decisions.
This course builds foundational knowledge and skills that are relevant for future study in Design and Technology in Years 11 & 12 and pathways into fashion, costume design, interior design, textile art, and other creative industries.
