Our first #KyLChat of the 24/25 school year is tonight, Tuesday, August 27! (12th season!) It will be a short one. I just have one or two questions to try out this new platform. We will be using Bluesky. I put some directions together for creating an account and getting started here. If you are new to “chats,” I have some directions for the chat, too. Hopefully, it will work! See you at 8:00 PM ET on Bluesky. You can find dates for future chats here.
I sent this a bit ago, but I wanted to make sure you saw it again before the August 30 deadline. This professional learning opportunity will enhance your literacy instruction skills and improve your ability to support your K-5 students, and strengthen collaboration with your teachers. "Provide high-quality library media programs" is in the very second section of the Read to Succeed Act, as an intent of the General Assembly.
This professional learning offering is also a key component of the Act. Tara Griffith, State Regional Literacy Director in the KDE Office of Teaching and Learning (also a former librarian, library supervisor, past KASL President, & past KLA President!), shared this important information on the Kentucky Reading Academies. Please note the August 30, 2024 registration deadline.
Boss Librarian PD Recordings: The 2024 Boss Librarian Professional Learning event recordings are now live on YouTube. Thank you to KC Boyd for organizing this work. You can generate a participation form and get links to the presenter resources here.
Canva Librarians Summer 2024 Virtual Showcase recordings are also available.
Reminder... Bloomsbury Libraries Unlimited is providing the archives of School Library Connection to everyone free of charge! There are so, so many great articles, but there are also webinars and self-paced workshops that you could use for professional development hours.
The Kentucky Library Association Fall Conference, Preserve Our Past & Advocate for Our Future registration is now LIVE! Learn more about this event and register on the conference webpage.
Be sure to get your KASL District meeting(s) on your calendar. I've collected some of them here. As district presidents let me know, I will add meeting details. These are great events that offer a chance to talk and share with school librarians in your area.
From Shannon Miller on Future Ready Librarians Group: Big news for International Dot Day, friends. Join the special International Dot Day Virtual Event with Peter H. Reynolds on September 16 at 10 am EST. You can register for this FREE LIVE event today.
From AASL: "Launch your school year with your school librarian colleagues for a bit of librarian-flavored inquiry. In our first AASL Gathering, we’ll consider the notion of unreasonable hospitality, connect dots you aren’t currently seeing, engage in brainstorming for radical change, and play with creating aspirational, human-centered goals that demonstrate impacts and leadership in and beyond school library walls. Curious to know more about this interactive learning opportunity? Sign up to listen, learn and share with Rutgers Associate Professor, Dr. Joyce Valenza at 6:00 pm Central Time on Thursday, September 12, 2024." Register here.
I know it seems far off... but go ahead and mark these dates. This is OUR national conference, which only happens once every two years, and this one is driveable for many of us here in Kentucky! October 16-18, 2025
With enough time to plan, strategize, and make arrangements, your district/school may be able to help get you and your colleagues to this awesome professional learning opportunity. I will share all the information and links as soon as the call for proposals goes out.
It may always be that season... 😅 Many of you have already shared updates with me (thank you!). If you are retiring, congratulations! Please let me know so I can edit my statewide directory of school librarians. If you are moving to a new school or district, I'd love that information, too! Send all the updates to james.allen@education.ky.gov
