I wanted to make sure you all knew of this professional learning opportunity that will enhance your literacy instruction skills and improve your ability to support your K-5 students, and strengthen collaboration with your teachers. "Provide high-quality library media programs" is in the very second section of the Read to Succeed Act, as an intent of the General Assembly. This professional learning offering is also a key component. Tara Griffith, State Regional Literacy Director in the KDE Office of Teaching and Learning (also a former librarian, library supervisor, past KASL President, & past KLA President!), shared this important information on the Kentucky Reading Academies. Please note the August 30, 2024 deadline.
The Kentucky Department of Education is offering a comprehensive, no-cost professional learning opportunity to eligible educators.
The purpose of the Kentucky Reading Academies is to increase reading outcomes for elementary students by providing high-quality, job-embedded professional learning about HOW students learn to read to K-5 teachers and administrators.
LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) is a professional learning opportunity for educators to gain essential knowledge and master the fundamentals of literacy instruction and how our students learn to read.
Registration for Phase 3 of the Kentucky Reading Academies will be open through August 30, 2024. Visit the KY Reading Academies website for more information and registration links.
If you decide to sign up, I would choose the students you see and/or add school media librarian in the "Other" spot.
This course is recommended for K-5 teachers, interventionists, reading specialists and anyone providing reading instruction or intervention support to early readers.
Each Educators cohort group will engage in professional learning over two years and cover eight professional learning units on topics essential for literacy instruction, including phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, writing and assessment. Each unit will include asynchronous, self-paced study and six hours of virtual facilitator-led learning.
This course is recommended for district leaders, building administrators and instructional coaches.
LETRS for Administrators is a one-year course that enables leaders to effectively support educators as they engage in the LETRS course of study and work to implement the learnings in their classrooms. LETRS for Administrators is a professional learning opportunity designed to guide state, district, and building administrators and instructional leaders in creating adaptable and suitable literacy initiatives using systems thinking and implementation science. The program defines the systems and infrastructures required to successfully implement a sustainable literacy program aligned to scientifically based research.
Multiple cooperatives throughout the state are offering the CEO rank change program in conjunction with LETRS training. The CEO rank change programs are owned and operated by the educational cooperatives. While the state covers the cost of the LETRS training, there will be a cost associated with a rank change.
