Summer Learning 🌞
I put together a list of summer learning events here. I hope to see you all at some of them!! I'll be at IFL, the KET virtual learning day, the KASL Summer Refresher, all of the TeachMeets, and the Tech Teach Learn day. I know the TeachMeets are looking for presentations. These are generally short sessions. It would be awesome to have school librarians sharing their knowledge!!!
KASL Summer Refresher 🌞
Registration is now open! The dates are July 10 and 11. (more information on the Summer Refresher here) If you have never been, please give this event a try. The Summer Refresher is specifically for and created by Kentucky school librarians.
Message from Emily Northcutt on the KASL Summer Refresher 🌞
Since some of you might still be at work, I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to make a shameless plug for attending the 2023 Summer Refresher on July 10th-11th in Frankfort!
Programming for July 10th will be a choice of half-day sessions at either Western Hills High School OR the Kentucky Historical Society. We will be getting an exclusive tour of the KHS libraries that is not normally offered to groups!
Also, on July 10th, we will have our annual KASL Awards, including a social hour/dinner event at The Foundry on Broadway. It should be lots of fun! (Additional ticket required)
July 11th will be a full day of excitement with confirmed special guests K.C. Boyd “The Boss Librarian”, 2023-2024 AASL President Courtney Pentland, and maybe others! We will also have sessions featuring Kentucky’s awesome school librarians, our 2023-2024 KBA Nominee Lists, an exhibit hall with our vendor partners, and LUNCH!
It is Kentucky’s capital city. Anything could happen! 😉
Want to join us? Of course you do! Visit https://www.kasl.us/conferences for hotel information and the registration link! Questions? Contact me or Rhonda Bell, and we’ll do our best to answer them.

Shannon Miller is offering a series of sessions this summer: "It's called Shannon's Series on Leadership. This webinar series will feature amazing library leaders, important and timely topics, and interesting conversations that will empower us with leadership skills and thinking throughout the summer and into the new school year. You will find all three of the leadership webinars here."
Freedom to Read:
Hi, Fellow KY Librarians,
As we are winding up the year and your brain is swirling with all of the things you have to do, you may be wondering what you can do to help advocate for your library and your scholars’ Freedom to Read. One simple thing is to send an email or letter to your principal, SBDM councils, superintendent, board member, or other interested parties. Coming up with such a letter is a difficult task when you are so passionate about your job, your scholars’ rights, and as you are trying to finish up the 99 thousand things on your end-of-year plate.
The Kentucky Association of School Librarians (KASL) has you covered. Thanks to AI and a fabulous group of advocacy committee members, we have a draft letter for you to edit and send to your constituents to help share our Freedom to Read Statement. You can find this letter here, as well as on our webpage under Intellectual Freedom and Advocacy.
We think this letter and this statement are important enough to share with all, but we have many more members-only resources in our Mighty Network. If you are not a KLA/KASL member, please consider joining us for those resources as well as for our Summer Refresher ’23! The odds are definitely in your favor!
All the Best,
Erin E. Weaver

New Things:
There is a new(ish) feature inside of Microsoft Teams called Search Coach. I'm just starting to explore it, but it seems like it might be applicable for information literacy work. I'll share more as I learn, but here is a link if you are interested. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/training/educator-center/product-guides/search-coach
