The Refresher is my favorite professional learning event, but there are many more available to us. Check out this page for a full list. Most are free! Register now, especially for the TeachMeet nearest you. KET just shared their summer information too!
Registration for the Refresher is now open! This part is important. If you are a Kentucky Library Association member, you will save $$$ on this 1.5 day of professional learning, for and by school librarians. Current Kentucky Library Association members have already received a discount code. To get this member benefit, you must join the KLA and choose KASL as your section (Directions for joining KLA). KLA membership is $65. Joining KLA before registering for the refresher will save you $30, plus you will be a KLA member!
Visit the Summer Refresher page for session descriptions and an outline of events.
Please contact Summer Refresher co-chairs Claire Lanham or Jonathan Paff with any questions.
It is that season. Many of you have already shared updates with me (thank you!). If you are retiring, congratulations! Please let me know so I can edit my statewide directory of school librarians. If you are moving to a new school or district, I'd love that information, too! Send all the updates to james.allen@education.ky.gov
The 2024 KBA winners have been announced. Check them out here. KASL offers a number of KBA Book Grants, awarded at the Summer Refresher. You can apply here. Are you interested in being on a KBA Award Committee, apply here! Thank you, Beth Atkins, Laura Mann, and your committee members for all of your work in keeping KBA going!

Congratulations to Tim Jones, school librarian at J.F. Kennedy Elementary in JCPS. He was just named a School Library Journal, Mover and Shaker. "Over the past 22 years, Library Journal’s Movers & Shakers awards have offered a compelling snapshot of what’s up and coming in the library world, as well as how it has changed. Our 2024 Movers cohort represents a range of innovative, proactive, and supportive work; they are imaginative and kind and brave in a world that needs those qualities—and the results they produce—very much."
The Kentucky legislative session is over. Although no bills passed that specifically focus on school libraries, I thought I would share this guidance document that KDE released a few days ago. The education legislation that has become law is explained within.
I know it seems far off... but go ahead and mark these dates. This is OUR national conference, which only happens once every two years, and this one is driveable for many of us here in Kentucky! October 16-18, 2025
With enough time to plan, strategize, and make arrangements, your district/school may be able to help get you and your colleagues to this awesome professional learning opportunity. I will share all the information and links as soon as the call for proposals goes out.
I'm sure you have tons of resources, but here are two, just in case.
Shannon Miller has been sharing these for a couple of years. It includes lots of resources and links to FREE ebooks. Here's the link to the slides.
KDE also has a page with summer learning resources. Check those out here.
