Happy Thursday and National Library Week! I hope you are doing well and powering through this last bit of the school year. Please check these few items out, especially registration for Summer Refresher and the KYVL survey.
#KyLChat 💙
Here is the archive of the #KyLChat on Tuesday, April 24, at 8:00 PM ET for our 15th #KyLChat of 22/23. Thank you, Jeanene Jones, for moderating on the topic of “summer reading”
How New Is Your Library? ⏳
If you haven’t filled out this form for your library (libraries), please take a second to do that. It’s a super-short form. I will use this data to help folks looking to visit newer spaces.
Professional Learning 📚
The School Librarian Learning Network curates a great list of professional learning opportunities. Check out their listings here.
Heidi Neltner and I helped organize the KyGoPlay makerspace at the STLP State Championships last week. Here is a quick post that has the stations we created for kids (and adults) to practice playing and learning. We tried to feature some of the new KBA nominees too! You can use the Canva template link to make these your own. STLP was a packed and record-breaking event! You can learn about winners and more here. Playing is learning!
There are 5 Teach Meets scheduled for this summer. These are great opportunities, and it’s important that school librarians are an active part of this learning community. Here are the links to register and present! July 17 - Eastern Kentucky, July 18 - Southeastern Kentucky, July 19 - Central/Northern, July 20 - Western Kentucky, and July 26 - Bowling Green.
KASL Summer Refresher 🌞
KASL needs you to share! They are accepting proposals through April 28 for the 2023 Summer Refresher. Here is the link to the form. Also, registration is now open! The dates are July 10 and 11. (more information on the Summer Refresher here)
From KASL:
There are only a few days remaining in School Library Month. That means there are only a few days left to share your library story. Using the template that James Allen modified & the hashtag #KASLWINS, share your library story on KASL's Facebook page, Twitter, or The Mighty Network. YOU must be a KASL member. All participants will be entered to win a FREE #KASLSR23 paid registration. You can access the Canva template here.

Hi, Fellow KY Librarians,
As we are winding up the year and your brain is swirling with all of the things you have to do, you may be wondering what you can do to help advocate for your library and your scholars’ Freedom to Read. One simple thing is to send an email or letter to your principal, SBDM councils, superintendent, board member, or other interested parties. Coming up with such a letter is a difficult task when you are so passionate about your job, your scholars’ rights, and as you are trying to finish up the 99 thousand things on your end-of-year plate.
The Kentucky Association of School Librarians (KASL) has you covered. Thanks to AI and a fabulous group of advocacy committee members, we have a draft letter for you to edit and send to your constituents to help share our Freedom to Read Statement. You can find this letter here, as well as on our webpage under Intellectual Freedom and Advocacy.
We think this letter and this statement are important enough to share with all, but we have many more members-only resources in our Mighty Network. If you are not a KLA/KASL member, please consider joining us for those resources as well as for our Summer Refresher ’23! The odds are definitely in your favor!
All the Best,
Erin E. Weaver

From KYVL:
Greeting LMS friends! Librarians and library staff are invited to take part in a survey to rate and comment on individual KYVL databases. The survey can be completed in five to 10 minutes, and will help the Collections Work Group evaluate KYVL's current range of database offerings. The survey can be found at kyvl.libwizard.com/f/2023-collections. Responses will be accepted through Thursday, May 4. Many thanks to those who worked to put this survey together and for your time and interest in taking part. Thank you, on behalf of KYVL and the Collections Work Group!
