Good afternoon! I have some updates and resources for you.
Still... Happy School Library Month! KASL has some templates to celebrate you (or a school librarian friend). Check them out and share!
KASL Kentucky Bluegrass Award Winners
This is always a fun day! These are the books your students chose as KBA winners! Check out the full list of winners here. Here is the list of 2027 KBA nominees that will be voted on next year!
I've updated our Summer Professional Learning page. There are lots of options out there. Do check with your individual Education Cooperatives' calendars to see what they have available. Sometimes they are free to any teacher, but other times your district must be a member. Some of our school districts join multiple cooperatives!
I'm looking forward to the Summer Refresher! Be sure to register, but also submit your session proposals.
I've not shared this yet, but we now have the KY Learning Hub (Canvas for KDE) where we are sharing some self-paced professional learning courses. A new one on artificial intelligence will be available soon. When it is, I'll share the link. I'm working on an "Intro to KYVL" course as well.
Adam Watson just shared this event with me that's happening in partnership with the Frazier Kentucky History Museum and OVEC. "Engaging Students With KY History Through Tabletop Role-playing Games" This sounds like a great time and totally applicable to school librarians.
Hello!
We are currently accepting presentation proposals for the 2026 Kentucky Library Association (KLA) Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT) Retreat!
The conference will be held July 15th (online) and July 16th (in-person at Eastern Kentucky University). The free, online day of the conference on Wednesday will include online presentations, and the in-person day on Thursday will include traditional presentations and interactive workshops. Depending on the number of submissions, there may be concurrent sessions.
We welcome presentations on any topic, but our members have expressed that they find topics related to library instruction and information literacy most valuable.
Submit your proposal by Friday, May 1st.
Thanks for considering!
KLA LIRT Officers,
Tessa Withorn, Chair
Kayla Davidson, Vice Chair
Dana Kendrick, Secretary/Treasurer
Sadly, I don't have any real updates, YET! Our extremely patient review team will be meeting on Thursday, May 28. I have high hopes that we will get a ton done on that day, but it will take some offline work after that. I'll share a link to a public comment opportunity on our draft work as soon as it's available.
The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) is now providing statewide access to TeachingBooks, a website of resources that brings reading to life for all readers. With more than 372,000 resources for over 97,000 children’s and teen books, this literacy service empowers patrons to learn more about their favorite books and authors while supporting staff initiatives, including program planning and collection management.
If you haven't checked it out yet... Jump on there and start exploring. Here are some cool things I found:
Our 2027 KBA books! - KBA Book Resources
Author profile – Jerry Craft
Collection analysis – this looks interesting
Titles with poetry multi-leveled lessons
I'm keeping this in here... Thank you for any updates you have.
If you are retiring, congratulations! Please let me know so I can edit my statewide directory of school librarians. If you are moving to a new school or district, I'd love that information, too! Send all the updates to james.allen@education.ky.gov
