As learners grow and evolve with changing times, the process must be continuously contextualised to meet their needs. Recognising that every child possesses a unique potential and knowledge system, the Bhutan Baccalaureate values each learner’s background and experiences, incorporating them meaningfully into the learning journey. Adults, with their life experience, play a vital role in facilitating this journey as co-learners. The first step in actualising one’s potential is self-awareness-identifying strengths, areas of improvement, and setting personal goals and aspirations. This dynamic engagement with learning, life, society, and the environment supports learners in becoming the best versions of themselves.

At the heart of the learning journey lies the roadmap- a living document that reflects a learner’s present needs, goals, and aspirations. It enables them to take ownership of their development, self-assess progress, and redefine their goals over time. As learners progress, a Portrait of the Learner gradually emerges, encapsulating their holistic development. This Portrait not only represents the learner’s growth but also becomes a key instrument in assessing the effectiveness of the school community. The collective success of learners serves as the benchmark by which educators and administrators evaluate their impact. In Bhutan Baccalaureate, the Backstory refers to the unique life experiences, family background, culture, values, strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations that shape each learner. By valuing and celebrating these attributes as gifts, schools and mentors create meaningful connections that inform the learner’s journey. The Backstory serves as a starting point for planning learning experiences, guiding the development of Roadmaps, and helping mentors support each learner in actualising their potential.

2. Roadmap

In the Bhutan Baccalaureate, a Roadmap is a dynamic and personalized plan of action designed to guide an individual, group, or the entire school community in their growth across the Five Areas of Development—Cerebral, Emotional, Physical, Social, and Spiritual. Informed by each learner’s Backstory, the Roadmap includes key elements such as goals, action plans, indicators of success, and the integration of Skills, Processes, and Watermarks. It serves as a living document that helps individuals understand their strengths and areas for improvement, chart progress, and reflect on their learning journey. Created at multiple levels—from individual to school-wide—the Roadmap ensures that every learner is supported in actualising their unique potential through meaningful, contextualised experiences.

3. Skills, Processes & Watermarks

In the Bhutan Baccalaureate, skills, processes, and watermarks are core elements that guide a learner’s holistic growth. Skills are specific abilities used to carry out tasks, processes are structured steps that help deepen understanding and apply knowledge, and watermarks are personal traits like resilience, compassion, and leadership that shape a learner’s character. Together, they support continuous learning and are integrated into each learner’s roadmap to help actualise their full potential.

learning experience is crafted to help learners develop relevant skills, engage in processes, and embody essential watermarks such as resilience, compassion, and creativity. Rooted in the learner’s backstory and guided by their roadmap, learning experiences are experiential, reflective, and personalized—fostering ownership, purpose, and self-discovery in the learning journey.

6. Cross-Pollination

Cross-pollination in the Bhutan Baccalaureate is a holistic process that brings together skills, processes, watermarks, domains, and the Five Areas of Development to encourage deeper learning. It enables learners to shift between broader and more focused perspectives—zooming out to see the big picture and zooming in for finer details.
