Nganglam Central School is located in the semi-urban area under Nganglam Dungkhag in Pema Gatshel Dzongkhag. Before the establishment of this school, the place was locally named as 'Kusawang', where 'Ku' stands for 'statue' and 'sawang ' stands for 'trench': it means a trench dug to supply mud for making statues. It is situated just above the heart of Nganglam town and Kerong River.
There is a legendary story behind calling the name 'Nganglam' which has a strong association with Kerong River. The name 'Nganglam' derived from the local dialect 'Lam Ngangpa', which means 'confusion brought by the misguided route'. According to the oral narration, Kerong River that runs below the school once competed with its male counterpart Kurong Chhu which was flowing from the other side. However, due to confusion in its course, Kerong River was brought to a halt when Kulong River already reached its destination. There is another mythical story that the Kerong River was about to take the course towards India but she thought that she would be exploited in becoming a servant in terrace farming. The river halted a while and decided to take the course below the school. Thereafter, the place got its name 'Nganglam'.
The school was first established in 1989 but it was formally opened and started academically in 1991. Mr Sonam Tshering was the first founding Principal of the school. The school was started with a Junior High School and then upgraded to Middle Secondary School in 1997. The school has not only benefited the catchment area of Nganglam and Pema Gatshel Dzongkhag, but also catered the education services to the nearby district such as Samdrup Jongkhar, Sarpang and Zhemgang too. However, the school had to be shut down for four years from 2001 to 2004 due to encroachment of Assam separatist insurgent groups in Southern Bhutan. As a result, the school was shifted and merged with Sarpang Higher Secondary School for the safety of students.
After completing four years, the school reopened and reinstated in 2005 with 9 teachers and 350 students. In 2010, the school was upgraded to Higher Secondary School. Thereafter, the school offered three courses such as arts, science and commerce stream. From 2016, Nganglam Higher Secondary School became a Central School as part of the education reform and autonomy to function independently. Free uniforms, meals, stationeries and boarding facilities were some of the blessings of a central school. In 2021, Nganglam Central School was selected as one of the Bhutan Baccalaureate schools in Bhutan as a part of education reform under The Druk Gyalpo's Institute, Pangbisa.
In January 2024, Mr. Leki Tshering joined the school and he is currently serving as a Principal of Nganglam Central School. According to the school statistics 2025, the school has 35 teaching staff including the Principal.
