Choekhortoe Primary School (CPS) is located beside the mighty Chamkhar chu in Choekhor Gewog. It is about 24 Kms toward north, from Ja Dzong. The school is connected by farm road from gewog center and mobile service (B-Mobile) but lacks 5G connectivity. The school was constructed as Extended Classroom (ECR) of Jakar Primary School (now Wangdicholing Lower Secondary School)
Established in 1991, the school is one of the four schools in the gewog. The school started with 77 students (34 boys and 43 girls) manned by 2 teachers. Mr. Tashi K served as the first Principal (then Head Master) from 1991 till 1993 followed by Mr. Yeshi Ngedup who served just for a year in 1994. The school did not have any officially appointed head for four years (1995 – 1998). In the year 1999, Mr. Pema Rigzin was appointed as the Head Master after he was selected in the interview. He served the school till May 2002. The school was taken over by Mr. Lham Dorji, the next Head Master who served till 2006 (March) after which Mr. Rinchen Samdrup served as the fifth official principal from 2006-2007. From the year 2007 to 2012, Mr Pema Tashi served the school as the principal. From the year 2013 to 2022. Mr Taw Tshering served as Principal and he was the sole person to serve the school for longer period of time.
Finally, at present(2023) Mr kinzangla was appointed as an officiating Principal by the Dzongkhag administration. Today school had 7 teacher(3 female and 4 male) and 83 students(42 male and 41 female).
The school is located on the banks of refreshing chamkhar chu with 9.640 acres of flat land. The school boasts of a standard size football ground and volleyball court. Unlike other remote school, CPS has a MPH constructed by Gewog Development Grant (GDG). The school is just few minutes from the Zhabjithang Lhakhang where one can see the footprints of Guru Rinpoche.
Students in CPS come from five villages and the army camp in Khagtang. The farthest, from school, is Zangling which is about an hour walk below the ruins of Drapham dzong.
CPS also has an ECCD center in the campus which has one facilitator for about 11 students which was established in 2013. The ECCD graduates are enrolled in the school for formal education once they attend 5 years of age.
The school has produced many engineers, doctors, businessmen and teachers in her 30 years of service to the community.
