What is personal data?

Personal data is information about you as an individual that can be used to identify who you are. This can include your name, personal identity number, address, or a photo in which you appear. The school is responsible for protecting your personal data and making sure it is only used appropriately. The rules governing this are called the GDPR and are designed to help you feel confident that your information is being handled safely.

What Do Confidentiality and Sensitive Information Mean?

Confidential information is information about you or others that must not be shared with just anyone. For example, it may be information that could harm you or someone else if it fell into the wrong hands. The school has a major responsibility to protect this type of information and make sure it is only accessed by people who are authorized to see it.

Sensitive personal information is information about you that is especially protected. This may include:

Ethnic background (where you or your family comes from)
Political opinions
Religious or philosophical beliefs
Trade union membership
Your health (for example, whether you are ill or have allergies)
Your sex life or sexual orientation
Genetic or biometric data (special data about your body)

Photos and Videos at School

At school, someone may occasionally take photos or record videos, for example during a lesson, theme day, lecture, or similar activity. In those situations, it is important that you know what the rules are.

The school always asks first. In most cases, permission (consent) from you and your guardians is required before photos or videos in which you appear may be published, for example on the school’s website.
You may take photos or videos of your friends, but only if they have said that it is okay and if it is for private use. Always think carefully before sharing anything, and respect anyone who does not want to be photographed or recorded.
It is never allowed to take photos or record videos secretly or in a way that could be considered offensive or degrading.

Have You Accidentally Seen Sensitive Information About Someone Else?

If you accidentally see or hear something that you realize is sensitive or personal about a classmate or someone else, tell an adult at school right away. It is important that this kind of information is not shared with others.
