Some of our finished designs....don't they look FABULOUS?!
This morning, we were set a STEM challenge in our new class groups. We had to design and create a theme park or water park and we were only given limited supplies. We ALL worked super hard and were SO creative in our designs- it was hard to choose winners!
⭐Well done everyone! ⭐
😎 We had so much fun.....and the sun shone! 😎
In the afternoon yesterday, we were set a year group challenge to set up an obstacle course on the pitch. Each class took a section and made 5-6 obstacles. We were very creative with our stations and made some super suggestions of what we could do with the equipment.
Once we were shown what to do, we had a chance as a class to complete the whole course.
⭐ We did really well! ⭐
😊On Friday, Monday and Tuesday, we all had fun meeting our new classes and our teachers. 😊
🛶On Wednesday afternoon and Thursday, we all took part in our canoeing sessions with Outdoor Education. After some initial nerves, we all got in to our canoes and paddled up the river. 🛶
After a while, we were completing challenges and even dunking our hair in the water! 😁
This morning, we all enjoyed taking part in a dance workshop.
We certainly have some moves in P5C! 😁
Oh what fun we had! Everyone had great fun taking part in our Sports Day!
⭐ Excellent effort from everyone- well done! ⭐
🎵What a super performance last night of Killer Beez! 🎵
⭐Well done to everyone that came! I'm super proud of you all ⭐
📚AUTHOR VISIT 📚
📖 This morning, Primary five were very lucky to have a visit from bestselling author Abi Elphinstone. Abi lives locally in East Lothian and writes adventure books filled with magic. 📖
She captivated the children from start to finish with her magical tales and it was lovely to hear all about how the ideas for her books began. She shared her "real-life adventures and accidental daydreams" behind her books and gave our children lots of tips about leaping into their own stories.
Abi is coming to the end of her book tour around the country to promote her new book, "Ember Spark and the thunder of dragons". The children have all been given a bookmark home today with the details of how they can order this book should they want to - and have it personalised and signed by Abi- via the bookstore in East Linton.
We were so inspired by her visit this morning, that we have all sparked our fires of imagination and have started to write our own magical adventure stories .........maybe among us we have East Lothian's next bestselling author! 😊
Today, Sam shared with us a presentation he had made all about Neutron stars! He confidently presented the information and answered questions that we had. Although we didn't understand it all, we found it very interesting.
Well done Sam! We agreed that you deserve to ring the Bell of Brilliance. ⭐
P5C were delighted to win the Golden shoe award this week for having the most children in the class wearing their indoor shoes during a spot check. 😊
😲 WOW! 😲What an amazing show of the Aurora Borealis on Friday night!
I presume that most of you will have been in bed so here are a couple of the photos I took in my back garden- stunning!
This morning, we all got to ring the Bell of Brilliance for being Night under the stars Superstars!
Everyone was extremely well behaved, polite and helpful and worked well as part of our team.
This morning, we were using Cuisenaire rods to work out what the whole would be when we were given the fraction. We did really well 😊
⭐We did it! ⭐
Oh what fun we had! Mrs McGinlay is super proud of each and every one of us for making our camp so successful.
💤 An early night tonight I think for all! 💤
Then it was time to take our tents back down and pack up the camp. We had to carry out a "leave no trace" search and make sure that we had left nothing behind.
We played some games before heading back to school.
Using the charcoal from last night's campfire....
...to mark our warrior faces!
Entertaining ourselves quietly with a game of Top trumps while we wait for everyone else to wake up!
After a great night's sleep and a longer lie than Mrs McGinlay thought we would have, we enjoyed a yummy breakfast of cereal bars, fruit, porridge and pancakes😊
After such a lovely evening, it was time to brush our teeth and get settled in our tents.
It's all so quiet........shh, shh! 🤫
As the sun started to set, we roasted some marshallows on the fire. 🔥
They were sooooo yummy!
We sat around the campfire and chatted. It was peaceful and we could hear the birds chirping.
Martin made some popcorn on the campfire. It was fun to see it go pop!
We took it in turns to throw a disc into the fire and share what we were thankful for 🥰
🎤 Campfire entertainment from the cast of Matilda!
Very well done girls! ⭐
Kitchen helpers chopping up the sausage....in perfect circles! 😛
We all sat around the fire and had our tea. We ate up lots of pasta and then had some yummy cake 🍰
We all sang "Happy Birthday" to Eilidh and she blew out the candle on her cake 🎂
The first job was to put up our tents! We worked super well in our pairs and all managed with little help from the adults. 😁TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK! 😁
We started off in high spirits and singing our way along the path 😊
We were starting to get hot and tired and wondered how much further?! 😳
We made lots of stops along the way to admire the view.
We made it! Phew! We listened to Martin telling us about the tents while we rested our legs!
In preparation for our Night under the stars, we have been learning about Lennoxlove Estate. We have learned some interesting facts- did you know Lennoxlove Estate was used during WWII as a base for aircraft?
We have also been discussing the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and all about campfire safety.🔥
I think we are all set! 😊
Molly was nominated to ring the Bell of Brilliance this week for super effort in their reading and spelling. 😊
⭐Well done! ⭐
We got to choose what we wanted to draw.
Drawing sketches of some beautiful tulips 🌷
Erin told us about some of the trees in the garden.
We tried the maze again- it was a bit higher.....but we all made it to the center and back! 🤩
After lunch, our job was to help weed and collect the grass that was growing and smothering the apple trees. We used a variety of tools to scrape and dig it away and filled our barrows with it. At the end, we took our barrow to the compost heap and added it in. We did a great job and collected lots!
This morning we set off on our walk to Amisfield Walled Garden. We were excited to go back and to see what has changed since our last visit. 😊 When we arrived, we had our snack and then we did some observational drawings of things we could see around us. We explored parts of the garden and found a wooden xylophone and some wind chimes. We then used our senses to create some poems. It was lovely to sit in the peaceful garden.
🌸 Amisfield Walled Garden 🌸
This afternoon we had a STEM challenge in our new table groups. We had to use the craft sticks to make the given shape and then follow the instruction and try to complete the challenge......it was a bit tricky, but we didn't give up and used a growth mindset to complete some of the challenges. 🤩
Well done everyone!
This afternoon, we were lucky to have another visit from Author, Val, who came in to share her new books with us. She had taken some of our ideas from the last visit and added them in to her book! She then read us "Phy the Fighter Plankton" and very kindly gave us all a copy to keep!
Today, Jak got to ring the Bell of Brilliance! Mrs Laing said that he had been working super hard on his reading tasks with her. 😊
⭐Well done! ⭐
Welcome back everyone.....to our last term in P5! 😲
It's going to be another busy term!
This afternoon, Martin from Outdoor Ed, came in to answer some final questions about our Night under the stars and then he showed us how to put up the tents we will be using. Some of us had a go while others helped to direct! We are getting super excited about our camping adventure......not long now!
What a fabulous term we have had- it's been another busy one! You have all worked so hard and it was lovely to be able to share all of our successes with parents this week. 😊
Have a lovely Easter break with your family everyone- don't eat too many eggs! 😛
Today was Mrs Linton's last day at Haddington Primary School 😥
Lots of us have worked with Mrs Linton in small groups over the years and and we are all going to miss her very much!
We all hope that she enjoys her retirement when it comes at summer time.
Today, Oliver was the second person in our class to get to ring the Bell of Brilliance! He has been working super hard on his reading and has pushed himself to reach his AR target- choosing to read at every opportunity to finish his book and complete his quiz!
⭐Well done! ⭐
Some groups made a task/worksheet for their groups.
This helped us to check their understanding. 😊
We asked for some feedback on our lessons- it was very positive!
👏👏👏👏👏👏
Next, we demonstrated how to create a Viking brooch, step by step.
⭐Leaders Leading Learning⭐
Today, it was our turn to lead the learning in P5. We have been working super hard in our groups to create our lessons all about Viking Jewellery. We made slides/posters to explain what jewellery Vikings would have, what they were used for, what they were made from and how they would be worn.
Each group presented their introduction to a group from the other classes.
We taught 5D first and then reviewed and improved our lessons and then taught 5B.
Next, we went outside where 5A demonstrated a Viking shield wall- a way to protect themselves from attack!
Then it was our turn! We made a fairly tight shield wall and survived the attack without many casualties! 😁
⭐Leaders Leading Learning⭐
This afternoon, we had our second lesson- this time from P5A. They were teaching us about the weapons the Viking warriors would use.
First, each group presented their information slides and shared facts about weapons with us. At the end they asked us questions to check we had been listening! 😊
🎥 Today, we had a visit from Jonathon Charles. He came in to tell us about how to use film in the classroom. He shared some information about how best to record a clip and we found out all about the different shot angles you can use.
We will be working in small groups to record a short clip using the chrome tablets and then we will learn how to upload and edit it. 😁
P5B were first to teach us! They were very well prepared and taught us all about Viking longships. They had planned lots of different tasks for us to complete. We thought they did very well 😊
As part of our topic and Learners leading learning, each class have been working hard to learn about one aspect of Viking life that they can share with the other classes. 😊 We have to plan and create a lesson that we will teach to a small group. In P5C, we have been learning about Viking jewellery.
⭐Leaders Leading Learning⭐
📚 Sebastian has become a DOUBLE WORD MILLIONAIRE on AR!! 📚
⭐What an AMAZING achievement! Well done! ⭐
🤩 We have been super creative and Mrs McGinlay was very impressed with our results 🤩
📚World Book Day 📚
Mrs McGinlay set us a challenge- we had to turn a potato into a book character of our choice! We worked in pairs to create them and had great fun in the process! 😁
📚World Book Day 📚
On Thursday, we enjoyed celebrating world Book Day! We started the morning by telling our talking partners about our favourite book and then we did some paired reading with our P3 buddies 😊
First, we glued a cardboard circle and used string to make a pattern.
Then we covered it in tinfoil and smoothed it using a cotton bud.
This morning, we learned all about Viking jewellery. We created some Viking brooches of our own. We have been planning and creating lessons in groups to teach the other classes about jewellery too 😊
Ocean was the first person in our class to get to ring the Bell of Brilliance! She has been working super hard- I think her smile says it all!
⭐Well done! ⭐
😲You can imagine our shock and horror this afternoon as we were subjected to a Viking Raid from the pirates that go by the name of P5A!
We could hear the beat of the drum as their longboat headed along the coast and docked at the shores outside P5C.
We were helpless against the attack and although we tried to protect our goods, they managed to steal lots of our supplies- and take some slaves! 😲
(*We are planning our revenge!*)
Some of the musicians in the class helped to create sounds on their instruments. 🎷🎺🎻🎸🤩
🐝🐝This week, we brought it altogether by recording ourselves singing "Killer Beez!" and adding in some sound effects. 🐝🐝
🤩 Over the last three weeks, we have been working with composer Alan Penman, as part of East Lothian YMI Song writing workshops, to create an original song.
In week one, we decided on the title, "Killer Beez!" and started to think of some ideas for lyrics. In week two, we learned the tune and sang along, then created a second verse.
🔢As part of our numeracy work, we went along to P5A this afternoon. They have been learning how to use a Rekenrek to work with number and they shared with us what they have learned. It was tricky at first, but we soon got the hang of it and were managing to complete (most of) the sums they gave us! 🤩
We have crammed lots in to our mini Scotland topic and have learned lots about its landscape and language.
We have identified the main cities and towns and located them on a map. We have looked at the high and low lands and identified where the main mountain ranges and rivers are.
We have learned LOTS of new Scots words and have been putting these "tae guid use in oor writing!"
We also created some lovely tissue paper Scottish landscape artwork.
We finished off our topic by reciting our Scots poems to the class. Everyone did SO well and Mrs McGinlay was super impressed with all of our efforts. 👏👏👏
This morning, Mrs Gardyne showed us some new and exciting equipment- micro bots.
We had fun trying to work out the controls and soon had them whizzing all over the place!😁
This afternoon, we worked in our small groups to solve the puzzle and work out what our new mini topic is all about.
Every group managed (at varying speeds) to work out it is .......
Scotland! 😁
Welcome back!
I hope that you all had a lovely time over the festive period. I can't believe that we are starting term three! It is going to be another busy term and we have lots of fun things to look forward to. 😊
🎅Merry Christmas to all! 🎄
I hope that you all have a great Christmas break. Thank you for all of your hard work this term ⭐
See you next year! 🤩
We enjoyed designing a board game ....
.... and then playing each other's games 😊
🎅This afternoon we enjoyed watching a Christmas movie and having some Christmas themed snacks 🎅😋
Grinch Artwork 👍
We have had soooo much fun this afternoon at our P5 Christmas party 😁 Everyone looked very smart in their outfits! We enjoyed having fun, playing games and doing some dancing with our friends.
😊The countdown to Christmas officially has begun this week with our Advent calendar, festive phrases and creating a 5C panel for the hall. 😊
⛄Doesn't he look fabulous all finished and hanging in the hall? ⛄
Well done everyone- teamwork makes the dream work! 🤗
Then for our writing lesson, we had to write some clear, easy to follow instructions for how to make them! 😊
As part of the Diwali celebrations, we discovered that families make yummy sweet treats to share with each other. We made some "Coconut Barfi" today and then got to try them- most of us loved them and thought that they were yummy! 😊
🪔Today marks the start of Diwali, the festival of light. We have learned about the story of Rama and Sita and how in the end, good triumphs over darkness and evil. We learned that Hindu people make Diya lamps which they place in their windows during the festival of light. We have started to make ours using clay- they are looking amazing! 🪔
In the afternoon, we created some Poppy art- don't they look fab?
As part of Remembrance Day, we took part in a minutes silence in school. We read a story about war and discussed why it was important to remember those who have lost their lives in battle.
We found out lots of facts about the way water is treated in Haddington. We couldn't believe it when we were told that a cow has been found in a water treatment work station before! 😮🐮
We enjoyed the talks that we had from Scottish Water and learned lots.
Thank you to our Visitors 😊
🎃As part of our fun Halloween afternoon, we enjoyed a pumpkin drive with our friends and creating some Zentangle pumpkin art 🎃
👻 We had fun playing "Boo Bump" today- an addition game against our partner 👻 We enjoyed it when we could "bump" them off one of the numbers!
We all had lots of fun at the PTA Halloween Disco on Monday night. We enjoyed dancing with our friends and playing the fun games. Didn't everyone look fab?
Scarlett and Thalia held a sale on Saturday at Scarlett's house. They had hand made lots of items and baked as well.
They raised £567 for Cancer Research- Amazing effort!!! You should be very proud of yourselves girls😊
Welcome back!
I hope that you all had a lovely, restful break with your families. Term two is going to be another busy term and we have lots of things to look forward to.
⭐ What a busy first term we have had! ⭐
P5C have worked extremely hard and achieved lots! We have had lots of fun too 😊
I wish you all a lovely October week.
Mrs McGinlay 👩xx
Today, we all enjoyed a taster session with Linda from the Drama Mill. We played fun games and then created a dramatic scene in groups which we put together to show Mrs McGinlay. She had to guess where we all were.....which was on board the Titanic! 😊
RMS Titanic!
Isn't she wonderful?
What a fantastic job P5C made of building the Titanic and returning her to her former glory.
Very well done everyone! 😊
Painting the sea and the sky.
Making the masts.
Painting the bottom of the ship.
Making the funnels.
⚓This afternoon, Mrs McGinlay set us the challenge of returning "Titanic" to her former glory and building the ship. We had to use the knowledge and sketches from our research of what the ship looked like to help create her. ⚓
⭐ We worked in groups and each group took a different section of the ship to make. We worked extremely well and Mrs McGinlay was super impressed with our ideas and focus. ⭐
🏭 After enjoying a visit to Torness Power Station with the Life Skills group on Thursday, Leila and Jak shared their visit with the class. 🏭
😮 Torness is a nuclear power station and we found out that it makes enough electricity to power over 2,000,000 homes in the UK! 😮
They told us all about what they saw when they were there and what they did.
Jak and Leila were excited to show us some of the goodies that they were given too 😊
🍎 After all our hard work, and fun, we got to choose and pick a Red Devil apple to eat. They have a pinkish flesh inside and we thought they were "delicious!" 🍎
We all enjoyed our visit and are keen to go back again sometime soon.
Erin told us about some of the trees in the garden.
We helped to pick up some of the apples that had fallen on to the ground.
Geordie found some lovely red apples.
🍎🍎🍎
😮 Wow! Look at the size of the apple Elle found!! 🍏
🌳 Lastly, Erin told us a bit about the garden and what grows there. We learned about how a Sycamore tree spreads its seeds. 🌳
😁 Next, we got to try the maze. 😁
"It was so much fun!" "We thought it was going to be easy when we saw it, but it was much more difficult than it looked!" "I kept going the wrong way, but I didn't give up!" "I made it to the tree, but then couldn't work out how to get back out again!"
⭐ Reuben was first to crack the maze and make it to the tree in the centre and Eilidh B was close behind! 👏
😮Wow! Look at all the leaves we managed to collect! 🍂🍁
🤩 Team work makes the dream work! 🤩
🍁🍂 Our first job was to rake up some leaves in the garden. We worked in pairs and each had a turn of raking and grabbing the leaves. It was hard at times as the wind was blowing our piles away- we had to be quick! 🍁🍂
This morning, we set off to Amisfield Garden for a visit. We had quite a long walk to get there but we were lucky that it was such a nice day 😊
When we got there we sat down in the lovely garden and had our lunch.
Today, Blaze was practising his spelling words from the "wa" word list. He did a super job! 😊
They are tricky words as they sound like they should be spelled "wo".
We had some time on each floor to read the information and make some notes about John Muir's life. At the end, we all shared a fact we had learned with the class.
On Wednesday, we enjoyed our class trip to John Muir's Birthplace in Dunbar.
😊 It was lovely to see everyone this week at our parental consultations. 😊
Wishing you all a fabulous long weekend ❤♥
🐉As we head into the long weekend, our dragon eyes are finished and ready to dry out. We are looking forward to painting them when we return next week. 🐉
⭐ Don't they look fabulous? ⭐
First of all, we had to think about the shape of the eye and how to build up around the pupil.
👁This afternoon, we started to design our Dragon eyes using clay. We discussed how to build up the eye around the pupil and how we could manipulate the clay. We used some tools to help us add details such as scales. 👁
🏉 Week three of rugby already! 🏉
Today, we enjoyed showing off our passing skills with some super partner work.
Then we had some fun team games.
We have all enjoyed our sessions so much this year and don't want them to end!
Reminder that next week will be our last taster.
📚 After listening to Simon, we enjoyed looking for books and then sitting somewhere quietly to read them 😊
This morning, we had a lovely visit to Haddington Library where Simon told us how to look for books we were interested in. We found out that all of the books are organised and linked to our AR system.
📚 It is free to join and you can take up to 10 books out at a time! 📚
🏉 We had so much fun trying to "tackle the bag" today! Mrs McGinlay was very impressed with how much we "went for it!" 🏉
Look out Haddington Rugby some new members may be incoming! 😊
After a quick rest and a trip to the toilet, we were straight back out to rugby!!
This morning, we had a lovely walk along the River Tyne in the sunshine. 😎 As part of our John Muir Award, we will be studying the river throughout the seasons. Our section will be from the Waterloo Bridge to the Stevenson Bridge. We stopped along the way to look at the water, the wildlife and to make some sketches and take notes. We finished with our snack.😊
👏👏👏👏👏👏
Didn't we do well with our designs?
Which one is your favourite?
Each group worked extremely well together and all completed their design within the given time. Next we had to test them....... which design would sweep up the most rubbish? 🤔
We then were set a STEM challenge to design a dustpan and brush from the materials we were given. Mrs McGinlay was very impressed with our problem solving skills and the ideas we came up with! 😊
After hearing the story of "The girl who never made mistakes", we had a great discussion about having a Growth Mindset and not giving up when things get tricky.
We recognise that mistakes are a part of learning and should help us to improve next time. ⭐
🏉We all had lots of fun this morning at our first rugby taster session with Mr McInnes. 🏉
We particularly enjoyed the warm up game of "rats and rabbits" 😊
Today we had to work as a team to build some 2D/3D shapes out of cocktail sticks and marshmallows.
⭐ Didn't we do well? ⭐
This week, we have been consolidating 2d/3d shapes and their properties. We had a successful shape hunt at Millfield and in the playground and have played games on the chrome books to test our knowledge.
We started to learn about John Muir today with an active group task.
We had to match the questions about him with the answers we thought sounded right.
We all worked hard and as a result, we have learned lots about him already! 😊
In P5 we will be learning about John Muir.
❓ We don't really know much about him at the moment but we want to find out who he is, what his life story is and why he is important?
Look at that beautiful colour! 😲
Today Mrs McGinlay brought in some dragon fruits for us to see. They looked exotic! Although they look spiky, the leaves are actually smooth to touch.
We created some descriptions of the dragon fruit in our writing lesson and also did an observational drawing of the fruits. In the afternoon, we cut them open and were surprised to see that the flesh was a bright purple colour!
We all tasted a piece of the dragon fruit- most of us like it! Surprisingly, it does not taste as juicy as it looks. We thought it was quite bland! It reminded us of a kiwi.
We had great fun testing our bridges- some with super success!
We discussed why some worked while others didn't and what we would change to stregthen them further.
Time to test the strength of our bridges- will the cars get across?
We all had some super ideas about how to build our bridges initially. We had to problem solve as we went along, overcoming challenges and thinking of solutions 😊 Super team work! 😊
We finished our first week back with a STEM team challenge. Each group was given £100 to spend on materials and had to plan and build a bridge to cover a 30cm gap. The bridge had to support the weight of a car travelling over it.
I hope that you all had a lovely summer. It has been so nice to have you all back in class this week- I know we are going to have another fabulous year together. 😊
