In S3 RMPS you will be exploring moral and philosophical issues as well as analysing religious responses to these. You will develop your own view in response to these topics. Answering questions such as: "Is there a place for the death penalty in modern society?" "Should we allow a suffering person to end their life?" "Does the appearance of design in the universe prove the existence of God?"
Topics
Morality and Justice - Exploring the causes of crime and the purposes of punishment and reflecting upon moral issues in relation to these.
Morality and Medicine - Investigating moral issues surrounding medical ethics such as assisted dying and the use of embryos.
Existence of God - Evaluating philosophical arguments for the existence of God and considering the effectiveness of these arguments.
In National RMPS you will either be completing a National 3, National 4 or National 5 qualification.

Added Value Unit
If you are doing National 4 your Added Value Unit will allow you to pick and research an RMPS topic in depth. You will:
Collect relevant information for your topic that includes at least one religious view
Describe your topic and explain some key information about it
Describe why your topic is important in the modern world
Assignment
If you are doing National 5 your assignment will allow you to pick and research an RMPS topic in depth. Following your research you will then type up your findings and then write it out in exam conditions (1 hour). This is worth 20 marks and 20% of your overall grade. You will:
Identify an appropriate religious, moral or philosophical issue for study, about which there are alternative or different points of view
Comment on the significance or impact of the issue
Use different sources of information
Explain and analyse the different viewpoints
Present a detailed and reasoned conclusion on the issue
Exam
If you are N5 then 80% of your final grade, 80 marks, come from your performance in the exam. The exam length is 2 hours and 20 minutes and will cover the three topics listed above. You will need to demonstrate the skills of knowledge and understanding, analysis and evaluation in relation to each topic.
