Overview of Higher Italian
Higher Italian is a crash language course which is currently offered in the senior phase only.
At the moment, Musselburgh Grammar School is the only secondary school in East Lothian that offers Italian, and its popularity in the school is growing year on year.
Every pupil in the class is a beginner and will work up to Higher level in the space of an academic year. National 5 or National 4 is also an option for those who would prefer this. Due to pupils working up to a Higher level of Italian language in the space of a year, pupils should be prepared for an intense course.
Pupils wishing to study Italian at Musselburgh Grammar School would benefit from previous language experience at National 5 or Higher (French, German and Spanish are all offered from the BGE to S6), however this is not essential - all pupils are welcome, regardless of their language background.
Teachers of Higher Italian (2023-2024):

Each year, the Higher Italian class get the opportunity to experience the following trips:
Trip to the opera - held in Edinburgh in conjunction with the Festival Theatre, the Playhouse or Usher Halls.
Vittoria's on the Bridge - George IV Bridge, Edinburgh. Here pupils get to experience an authentic meal in Italian whilst using transactional language in Italian to order their food and drink from native Italian waiters.
Planned future trips:
Trip to Glasgow and/or Edinburgh Universities to visit the Italian departments there. On this trip, pupils will be able to ask about what it is like to study Italian at these universities.
