Suonenjoki is a small and cosy town, located in the breathtakingly beautiful central Finland. The surrounding clean and nurturing nature and forest provide beautiful and safe place for the town to flourish. Suonenjoen yhtenäiskoulu is the largest basic education provider in the town. It involves classes from primary to secondary levels, students being aged between 7 to 16. Suonenjoen yhtenäiskoulu has approximately 440 eager pupils and 50 active and devoted staff members.
Suonenjoen yhtenäiskoulu follows the new Finnish national curriculum which has been put into practise in August 2017. The new national curriculum emphasizes student centered learning, cross-curricular teaching and the use of ICT solutions at school. It also promotes critical thinking skills, involvement of the pupils in their own learning process, earning-to-learn skills, experiential learning, continuous evaluation, active citizenship and equality among pupils.
The modern school building is practical, versatile and student-friendly. Half of it is only few years old and is designed to serve new ways of teaching and learning. Suonenjoen yhtenäiskoulu is very well equipped with modern ICT devices.
The surrounding environment around the school invite to take the teaching and learning also outside the classroom and outdoors. The needs and demands for outdoor facilities vary with the seasons. We have superb forests, forest trails, lakes, sports grounds, fields for different ball games, ice-rink and tradition to work together with the local enterprises and communities. The school yard is also spacious and can be used as a resource for outdoor education.
In addition to the basic education groups, Suonenjoen yhtenäiskoulu also has five special education classes, where pupils with more demanding special needs study and get the help needed in order to cope with their academic studies. Furthermore, Suonenjoen yhtenäiskoulu is proud of its flexible basic education. The flexible basic education aims to prevent social exclusion and dropping out of school. It aims to encourage pupils to stay in school and apply to secondary education. The level and amount of student counselling is also something to be proud of: it is a mandatory school subject for every pupil over 12 years old in Finland. Suonenjoen yhtenäiskoulu also offers preparing education for basic education for pupils coming from abroad.
