"I hate your blue hair"
Tolerance, being aware of normal ethnocentrism and seeing beyond it.
Ethnic identity is built on an ethnocentric foundation:
What is natural, normal, what is right, what is not normal
For me, the way to act and think is natural and correct.
For us, anything good is good.
It's hard to understand that what I think is good for me may not please everyone and is not good for them. We cannot know for others what is good for them.
Most obvious right norms, roles and values
Because I have thought about what is right and because I act rationally, it is obvious that those who are different are wrong.
Cooperation and help among ourselves
I am helpful and cooperative, but if I have to choose, the priority is naturally my own family, friends, acquaintances, Finns, Nordics, etc. before complete strangers.
Interest of own group
If I can only get a share of the limited resources, then my duty is to make our group happy. I could not act against the interests of my own group.
Pride in one's group
Good self-esteem also includes pride in one's roots and one's group.
Hostility towards other group members.
Being different is something that should be treated with caution and healthy skepticism. We don't accept opinions without thinking and we don't welcome foreign groups with open arms.
So what about:
What we don't know, scare us. -> Increase information and knowledge about difference
Concentrating on speaking positive things, using positive language
Role play (with caution): What does it feel like when teacher speaks a language I don't understand, What does it feel like when I had to leave everything behind and move to another country? What does it feel like, when all noises around become triple loud in my head? What does it feel like when somebody says something but means complitely different, and I don't understand it?
You don't always need words to make your point:
How do you suggest with only facial expressions or gestures that you can sit here/ you can't sit here.
You can play with us/ You can't play with us.
