This page is designed to publish important information and important dates for current IB students and their families. Because individual teacher calendars can change, students and parents are advised that the IB test calendar is used for planning purposes and may not always reflect every teacher's class.

RCW 28A.230.122 International Baccalaureate Diplomas
Current students and parents are advised to read this section about RCW 28A.230.122 International Baccalaureate Diplomas, which outlines the requirements that must be met in order for full-diploma students in Washington State high schools to waive credits that would otherwise be required for a high school diploma.
Regarding the Washington State IB Law ( RCW 28A.230.122 International Baccalaureate Diplomas,) all students and parents needs to remember that, under this law, in order to waive credits in a Washington State high school, students must meet the criteria set forth in the law. Any students who hope to waive any credits under the law including PE or CTE must meet the law’s requirements. Particularly, section 3, which reads:
(3) To receive a high school diploma under this section, a student must complete and pass all required international baccalaureate diploma programme courses as scored at the local level; pass all internal assessments as scored at the local level; successfully complete all required projects and products as scored at the local level; and complete the final examinations administered by the international baccalaureate organization in each of the required subjects under the diploma programme.
For the full text of the law, please visit https://app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=28A.230.122.
So, essentially, students who intend to waive credits must submit all IAs and site-based EAs, must complete all course requirements, must pass all classes, and must sit for all exams in May of the testing year. All of this is very clearly outlined in the SHS document "Compliance at SHS with RCW 28A.230.122." Failure to meet the requirements set forth in this document will mean that all Summer High School graduation requirements would need to be met in order to earn a Sumner High School diploma. See a full text of the document below.
The following two sections contain live versions of the IB Testing Calendar and the IA calendar. As dates can change, please check with individual teachers for final dates.
Compliance at SHS with RCW 28A.230.122 International Baccalaureate Diplomas
Sumner High School -- Updated October 2017
Section One: Introduction
In 2011, House Bill 1524 was signed into law and became RCW 28A.230.122 . This law states that meeting the requirements for the IB Diploma fulfills most high school graduation requirements and students may waive certain otherwise required courses in order to pursue the IB Diploma.
The purpose of this document is to outline for all stakeholders clear expectations for meeting the guidelines of RCW 28A.230.122. We are particularly concerned with subsection three which reads:
(3) To receive a high school diploma under this section, a student must complete and pass all required international baccalaureate diploma programme courses as scored at the local level; pass all internal assessments as scored at the local level; successfully complete all required projects and products as scored at the local level; and complete the final examinations administered by the international baccalaureate organization in each of the required subjects under the diploma programme.
Section Two: Applying the Law at Sumner High School
Students who do not take normally required courses with the intent to waive those credits to pursue the Full-Diploma Programme at SHS must understand that, in so doing, they are committing to completing and passing all Diploma Programme requirements including:
1. Passing all courses as reported at semester term grades
2. Completing and passing all internal assessments and components of internal assessments during the semester that they are due (defined below)
3. Completing all “required projects and products” during the semester that they are due (defined below)
4. Sitting for all 6 IB exams in the spring of the junior and/ or senior year. (Certain students may take up to two SL exams at the end of the junior year if they are in a qualifying course.)
Students who do not meet the above requirements will need to earn the credits they hoped to waive in order to meet the Washington State/ Sumner High School requirements. This will most likely result in a schedule change at SHS as we must ensure high school graduation before IB diploma candidacy. Each semester of the program, students will track their performance in advisory class. Additionally, teachers will send the names of students who have not met requirements to the Diploma Programme Coordinator. Parents will be notified by the Coordinator if a student is no longer eligible to waive credits in order to pursue the IB Diploma.
Section Three: The Checklist
This checklist was created to assist students in tracking completion of the requirements for items 2 and 3 above: “passing all internal assessments” and “completing all required projects and products.” Full-diploma students will receive this document in their full-diploma advisory class. Each semester of the two years of the Diploma Programme, students will use this checklist to track completion of these requirements.
