Juniors and Seniors at Sumner High School may take 1-6 IB classes from the following list. Full-diploma requirements are listed on the "Full-diploma" page. Prerequisites and recommended courses are listed after each course. Individual students who do not have the recommended prerequisites are encouraged to talk with IB instructors or with the IB Coordinator to see if taking a specific courses are possible.
All IB courses at Sumner High School are two-year courses. HL (higher-level courses) are designed to cover college-level content and develop college-level skills; SL (standard-level courses) tend to be akin to college-preparatory courses, designed to prepare students for success at the university level. Full-diploma students take 3 or 4 HL classes and 2 or 3 SL classes.
Group one: Studies in language and literature
IB English SL Language and Literature
IB English HL Literature (10th Honors English strongly recommended for HL but not required for SL)
Group two: Language acquisition
IB French & IB Spanish (successful completion of French 2, Spanish 2)
Please note that after 2018-2019, we will no longer offer IB Japanese.
Group three: Individuals and societies
IB Psychology SL (last testing group in May 2020)
IB History HL (Honors Civics strongly recommended)
IB Business and Management HL (Intro to Business and Marketing strongly recommended)
Group four: Sciences
IB Chemistry SL
IB Physics SL
IB Environmental Systems SL
IB Biology HL (successful completion of biology and chemistry or physics recommended)
Group five: Mathematics
IB Math SL (successful completion of Algebra 2)
Note: IB Math is followed by AP Calculus BC
IB Math Studies (successful completion of Algebra 2--students who have successfully completed Geometry by the end of 10th grade and who wish to pursue the full-diploma may go directly into Math Studies. )
Beginning with the 19-20 school year, the new IB Maths courses will be:
SL Math Applications and Interpretations
SL Math Analysis and Approaches Year One
Group six: The arts
IB Art HL or SL (Beginning Drawing and Painting and Ceramics strongly recommended)
IB Film HL (Honors 10th Grade English and Broadcasting 1 & 2 strongly recommended)
Scheduling note: IB full-diploma students may substitute a second course selected from groups 2-5 in lieu of taking IB Art or IB Film from group 6. Prerequisite rules apply. Questions can be directed to Ms. Swigart, the IB DP Coordinator.
