HERE IS MORE INFORMATION IF YOU ARE REALLLLLLY INTERESTED!
PREPARE NOW!
If you are interested in playing college volleyball, it is important to start your recruiting process early! You will want to get a jump on the process as soon as possible to be seen and maximize your playing options! Here are some important steps for you to take to get the exposure you will need to get a roster spot at the collegiate level!
BE A GREAT STUDENT!
The goal should be to get your education first! If you are not staying up on your studies as a high school student, chances are you will not do the same as a college student! College coaches want to know you will work to be a graduate for them, so academics must come first! Understand that you will get academic money before you will likely get athletic money!
PLAY CLUB!
Choose a club that has a history or a process to helping their players find an appropriate college!
BE A GREAT TEAMMATE & KID
Coaches will watch how you treat your teammates, your coaches, and your parents. How you act and react BOTH ON AND OFF the court will be evaluated thoroughly. Be a great student, be a great teammate, be coachable, and be great to your coaches and parents - it all matters! This pertains to all areas of your life: school, friend groups, on social media, and in the community!
How you act on the court, on the bench and after games is just as important to a college coach as it is to how you play. They will scour the internet for anything you post - even if you have a hidden profile. They will not take risks on kids who pout, who do not support their teammates, who are negative toward their coaches and parents, or who look to their parents while they are playing their games.
START AND STAY WITH A STRENGTH TRAINING AND CONDITIONING PROGRAM
It is important to get yourself in optimal shape. Taking strength training classes like zero hour and working out with the summer conditioning coaches will improve your play, improve your power, and keep you healthy. The goal is to prevent overuse injuries common with year-round athletes. A volleyball player needs to take care of their shoulders, knees, ankles, fingers, and backs. An injury could be detrimental to a players future.
This is also the case for your nutrition. Start studying up on what it takes to be a female athlete. How can you get your body strong using food? If you are eating bad food, your performance will reflect that. Understand that there is someone training for your spot right now. If you have what it takes, you will do what it takes.

KEEP YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILES CLEAN
It is important for you to keep a clean and clear social media presence. What you tweet and retweet as well as what you post and present are looked at by coaches and your future teammates. They will be detectives if they are looking at you, so keep your online world respectable!
FRESHMAN YEAR
DO YOUR RESEARCH
Please read this awesome website to understand collegiate divisions: Smarthlete for Athletes, and click the links below to see the conferences and universities in each division. This site is for information only, as it is a college recruiting platform NOT sponsored by Peninsula High School.
NCAA Division I - 346 Universities, 34 Conferences , 12 scholarships
NCAA Division II - 288 Universities, 25 Conferences, 8-12 scholarships (can be split between players)
NCAA Division III - 429 (Mostly Private) Universities, 47 Conferences, only academic scholarships
NAIA - 229 Universities, 21 Conferences, 12 scholarships (one lump sum that can be divided)
NJCAA Division I - 111 Universities, 19 Conferences
NJCAA Division II - 131 Universities, 17 Conferences
NJCAA Division III - 99 Universities, 10 Conferences
NWAC - our local community colleges (Oregon full tuition, WA 60% Tuition, can split between players)
Start your college search HERE by selecting your sport, location, and other criteria! Again, this is for information only!
CREATE YOUR VOLLEYBALL SOCIAL MEDIA/INSTAGRAM PAGE
You will need to update your social media often. After every few matches and every tournament, post something that gets you noticed! NEVER try to diminish another athletes abilities in the process. Poor sportsmanship will push college coaches away!
START CREATING HIGHLIGHT FILMS!
Take clips to create film that highlights your strenghts! Coaches need to be intrigued within the first 30 seconds of your film. They want players that are solid in all six rotations first!
SOPHOMORE YEAR
EMAIL! EMAIL! EMAIL SOME MORE!
Pick your top 50 schools! Think about the level you want to play and the type of education you would like to have! Link your highlight films, gather your academic and season stats, and send emails to schools! Think mass email but PERSONALIZED EACH ONE to the coach and schools you are emailing - the more you send, the more coaches see you! It is a lot of work, but it is up to you to get the ball rolling, and to get yourself noticed!
Here is a sample email to help you along!
You will email the coaches before every large tournament as well as
ATTEND COLLEGE SUMMER CAMPS
The coaches put on summer camps as fundraisers for their program. If you want to be seen, attend their camp and talk to the coaches one-on-one! Sign up for summer camps in March! They start as early as June 15th!
ATTEND LOCAL SHOWCASES
A showcase event is where a group of college coaches visit towns together, putting on clinics for local athletes interested in attending their school. Showcase events are all year long, with most happening in the recruiting window starting February to June. You don't have to be affiliated with a club team to attend a showcase, but most of them happen at club facilities! It is important, when you email the coaches, you ask if they will be attending any of the showcase events in your area.
JUNIOR YEAR
EMAIL! EMAIL! EMAIL SOME MORE!
Pick your top 20 schools! You will need to contact the coaches who will be at your bigger qualifiying tournaments. Those coaches should be familiar with you! If you have gotten crickets from your dream schools at this point, you can continue, but you may need to adjust your goals!
Create highlight films after every match and/or tournament, gather your academic and season stats, and send a mass email to schools with links to your film!
SENIOR YEAR
COMPLETE YOUR CLEARINGHOUSES
NCAA Clearinghouse - you will have to register for an NCAA number to go on official visits. Even if you are undecided, it is important to create this number early. Official visits can start as early as June 15th of your sophomore year.
NAIA Clearinghouse - just like the NCAA, you will have an NAIA clearinghouse as well.
APPLY FOR SCHOOLS
Remember, you have to academically get into the schools you are wanting to play for!
FAFSA - Many states and colleges set priority deadlines by which you must submit the FAFSA form to be considered for the aid programs they administer. There is also a federal deadline each academic year. Check the website to see what your school/state requires.
SAT & ACT - Some schools have waived the SAT and ACT requirement, so check with your institution for their requirements! You will want your first attempt at the SAT completed by end of junior year!

WHAT IF I MISS TRYOUTS?
Sadly, tryouts are mandatory for team selection. All athletes will need to be at ALL TRYOUTS AND PRACTICES starting on day 1 of the season!
HOW ARE TEAMS SELECTED?
Volleyball is a cut sport, which means we only hold a specific number of spots per team. We will place players on either Varsity, Junior Varsity, or C-Team based on the appropriate skill level of each athlete. Some athletes, new and returning, sadly will be cut; but that should not stop a player from continuing to play the game they love. There is always an opportunity to play club and summer ball, as well as attend local skills camps, open gyms, and summer practices!
HOW OFTEN DO WE PRACTICE?
Starting on the first day of tryouts, volleyball will practice or play five to six times per week. Athletes must have 10 practices before they can play in their first match and can not miss practice for anything except illness or family emergency. You will need to be prepared to work everyday except Sundays until the last day of the season in November! Please schedule your hair appointments, dental appointments, etc. around our practice, tournament, and game schedules.
DO I NEED AN ASB CARD, and HOW DO I PAY FOR IT?
You will be required to purchase an ASB card once you have made the team. It is not necessary to purchase a card to tryout. You will pay through the bookkeepers link on the Peninsula High School website.
PRACTICE GEAR - VICTORY PACK - SPIRIT WEAR
We only wear Peninsula attire while practicing and playing for PHS. You can wear anything that is supporting PHS, or a plain t-shirt that is grey, black, green, or white. We love our clubs, but we are ALL SEAHAWKS in our gymnasium. Once teams are selected, you will purchase a Victory Pack from the bookkeeper. The pack will Include a practice t, a pink t, and travel sweats. We will have an online store to purchase additional spirit wear as well. We want to fill every gym with PHS Pride!
WHERE CAN I PLAY IN THE OFF-SEASON?
There are many local clubs in our area. Find them by going to https://www.psrvb.org/clublist. There are also a number of summer camps offered in our area as well. Check the local colleges and clubs for their summer offerings starting around March! Early registration for camps is key, as they fill quickly!
CAN INCOMING 9th GRADERS ATTEND THE SUMMER SESSIONS?
ABSOLUTELY! All incoming 9th graders are invited to attend our summer lifting and practice sessions. Incoming 9th graders should attend our MS camp as an introduction to our program if possible. Some of our more experienced incoming 9th graders will be invited to join the Team Camp and summer league (if we attend) too!
