Getting Started with your Course

Help! Why can't I log in?

First, you may have pop-up blockers on your device. Use google and search "disable pop-up blockers" and whatever type of device you have. Ex: "disable pop-up blockers ipad." You can also use these directions.

You might also need to clear your browser history and cache.

If you need tech support you can reach them by clicking here, by calling 1-866-890-8153, option 9 or by emailing support.academy@edmentum.com.

Why am I not getting emails? Or why can I not open EOA documents like schedules for Live Help?

It is likely that your school has an important safety measure in place where certain addresses are blocked so that outsiders cannot communicate with students. Please ask your school administrators to ask the district IT personnel to have all of the details with Edmentum and EdOptions Academy "white listed." This will allow our emails to make it to you! Here is a list of domains to request:

@edmentum.com

@plato.com

@edoptions.com

@edoptionsacademy.com

@calvertshipments.com

@calverteducation.com

Here is a "how to" guide to add trusted sites. A list of trusted sites that Edmentum uses is at the end.

This will unblock the Live Help/SOS schedule document and the Course Materials libraries (spreadsheets with recordings).

Please also check when you log in to your Genius account that the information there is accurate. Please confirm your phone number and email address so teachers can reach you!

I can't get on Zoom or I have questions about Zoom conferencing.

Click here to read more about loading the Zoom application onto your devices, how change your settings, see all participants etc. If you have a chromebook, click here.

How do I most effectively communicate with my teacher?

There are two parts to this question -- types of communication and what details to include.

Types of communication: Courseware message (inside your course), Genius messages (where you log in) and text messages are typically the fastest way to get a response. Zoom and the phone work as well. The slowest response is usually through emails because teachers are more likely to be inside Courseware or inside Genius working, not in emails.

Details to include: please include details so that your teacher knows how to best help you. Include the name of the class, the assignment name, slide number, question number etc. The more details you provide the faster we can work to help you!

My teacher is offering Orientation or Meet the Teacher. Do I have to go?

A live contact of some sort is required, so yes, you should attend orientation if your teacher offers you this option. It will be brief and we promise you will learn something that will help you in your course that you didn't already know! If you skip orientation, you will need to have a 1:1 welcome phone call or zoom meeting with your teacher. Please reach out to them to get this scheduled.

What is my schedule? What period do I have for each class?

Your school may have you working on your classes during assigned times of the day. However, you have access to your courses 24/7 and can work on them whenever you'd like (in addition to any possible assigned times your school provided)! Additionally, your teachers will be available during standard business hours or by appointment.

I have a question. How do I get it answered?

First, please look throughout this website for the answer.

If it's a question about a particular assignment, go to the subject page and then the course resources section. EX: English, Course Resources, English 10

If you do still have a question, please message your teacher through courseware or Genius, text, call or email. We can even set up a Zoom meeting.

What do I need to do for class today?

There are no official due dates for assignments in your course. The course is self-paced. You may work on anything today that continues to progress you forward in your learning. A general rule of thumb is to put in one hour each day in each subject and you will stay on pace. You can even work on your course late at night or on the weekends. It's all up to you!

Inside Your Course

How do I submit this assignment?

For discussions and unit activities, you need to follow a few steps to submit your work. Read more about how to submit work here.

Please remember that if you want the formatting to look the best, please save your work as a PDF. In google docs, choose File > Download > PDF.

How do I access the Guided Notes for class?

The majority of courses have guided notes. Guided notes are worksheets that help you to understand the material you're learning. They open as a PDF or in a new tab in your browser. You can download them and save them to your computer.

You may use Guided Notes on all of your tests and even your EOS exam.

You can find them in the tutorials on the far left side in the blue resources bar. Click here for a visual.

How do I save my Google Doc/Slide as a PDF to send to my teacher?

The best way to share documents with your teacher is by first saving it as a PDF. This will ensure that you have no formatting issues. To complete this process, please go to File > Download > Save as PDF. If you would like a visual of this process, please click here.

What is the difference between Live Help and Synchronous Overview Sessions (SOS)?

SYNCHRONOUS OVERVIEW SESSIONS (SOS): SOS are optional, but strongly recommended. Each core subject has two assigned days during the week to offer SOS. This way students will rarely have any conflicts between subjects.

Ex: "Live SOS at 10am CST all about the Tuskeegee Airmen in World War II."

Since all full-time teachers offer live lessons, you may be invited to hop into a different teacher's live lesson if they happen to be teaching something that you are learning about.

Ex: Your teacher for Biology is Mrs. K, but Mrs. Q has a live SOS for the unit you are working on, you are welcome to attend Mrs. Q's live lesson that week.

SOS are recorded and placed on this website under each subject's Course Resources.

LIVE HELP: A certified teacher is in each subject's Live Help room daily. They can answer any questions that you have.

During the traditional school year, the schedule is:

Monday – Thursday: 8am – 5pm CST

Friday: 8am – 3pm CST.

During the summer, please check with your teacher for the schedule.

I lost my work. What do I do?

Sorry that happened. It sounds like you got timed out. We highly recommend that you work in a Google or Word doc, periodically saving. If you are in a tutorial working, please make sure you click "SAVE AND EXIT." When you are finished, copy and paste your writing into your assignment and submit it. If you need further directions on how to download, save, and submit work, click here. PS: Unfortunately, your teacher can't grade what they can't read, so please resubmit the assignment.

This is hard. Are there helpful resources?

Yes. Besides the Guided Notes in your tutorials (see FAQ above), there are other resources available to you.

First, start on this website and navigate to the subject you are struggling with. Look to see if there is a help document and video recordings for your course. The help document will provide support including explanations on how to best complete assignments, sentence starters, videos etc.

Second, you can always hop into the Live Help room where a certified teacher will be available to help you:

Monday – Thursday: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Central Time

Friday: 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Central Time

Please see your teacher for a link to the zoom Live Help Rooms for each subject.

What is up with these Discussion Questions?

While the discussions are often listed at the beginning of each unit, you will likely do better if you wait until after the tutorials to complete them. Please delay completing them (don't worry about the suggested due dates. It will be ok) that way you can use your learned knowledge in your response.

One other important hint: be sure to answer ALL parts of the prompt!

I think a link might be broken. What do I do?

It is likely with the numbers of students that we have, that we have already been alerted to this issue. In which case, we have already sent the issue to support and are also waiting for it to be fixed. If you would like to email your teacher, you may. They will likely ask that you move on to another assignment in the meantime.

Understanding Your Grades

When will my work be graded?

Once you submit an assignment, your teacher will grade it within 24-48 hours, excluding the weekends. When you submit an assignment there is a time date stamp. Do not resubmit the assignment as your assignment will lose its place in the grading queue!

Why did I get a zero on this assignment?

Your assignment was most likely blank or plagiarized. Please read your teacher feedback to learn more about the grade. Then fix the issues and resubmit! If you are unsure how to see teacher feedback, please review this resource here.

Why did I get a low grade on this assignment?

For all written work, your teacher will provide you with feedback. Be sure to look for it! If you are unhappy with a low grade, no worries! You can always resubmit your assignment. To see how to find teacher feedback, click here.

Can I retake my post tests or quizzes?

Yes, you may retake each one more time. Before you request a retake, please review the questions that you got wrong and take some time to study further using your guided notes or student generated notes. Then message your teacher including the name of the test that you need reset.

Can I retake mastery tests?

Yes! In fact, you can retake them as many times as you would like, as this is where the learning is meant to take place. To retake your mastery test, click back through the tutorial and it will unlock for you. Aim for at least 80% on your mastery tests.

What is the difference between Current and Course Grades?

It's important to be fully aware of the differences between Current and Course Grades, and how they apply to ending your course.

The Current Grade is an average of work that has been submitted. It is not your final grade.

The Course Grade is your actual report card grade to date. It takes into account all assignments for the course. It will continue to go up as long as you continue to submit assignments that are required for class. When your end date approaches, please be very aware of your Course Grade--it is the one that matters!

Please take a moment to look at your Course Grade and check with your school about passing requirements. Remember that courses are weighted, and some assignments are worth more than others. Continue to complete work until your Course Grade is to passing.

Your teachers are always here to help!
