This course examines the development of Greek art and architecture from the fifth through the first centuries B.C. The course begins with an introduction to the forerunners of the Classical tradition in the Archaic period, continues with an emphasis on the development of Greek art and architecture during the Classical period after the Persian Wars, and concludes with a discussion of Late Classical and Hellenistic artistic production following the military campaigns of Alexander the Great. We will consider Greek art not only in terms of style and formal development, but also with respect to its historical, political, and religious contexts.
