"I have found that what I have not drawn, I have never really seen, and that when I start drawing an ordinary thing, I realize how extraordinary it is, sheer miracle." - Frederick Frank
The Dutch artist Frederick Frank incisively summarizes the heart of any visual arts program - to teach students how to see. Yet "seeing" is such an instinctive, mundane part of our existence that we often don't take the time to comprehend the power of this human sense and its influence on our everyday lives. Whether we are drawing from a still life, photographing our vacation, casually flipping through television channels, or simply reading billboards on the side of a highway, we live in a world in which we are saturated with images on a consistent basis. Learning to create art - in other words, learning how to see - forces us to slow down and contemplate the complexity of life around us and appreciate the structure and beauty of how our visual world is put together. At Founders, the high school art curriculum strives to cultivate an understanding of not only the logic and principles through which beautiful art is made, but also an inquisitive spirit that seeks to know how and why visual art plays a role in our lives.
