Fable Characters with Recyclables

Slovenia is one of the top 3 Recycling countries in the world! They make a national effort to educate their citizens and promote reusing, recycling, and caring for the environment.

The project "Making your Character with Recycling Materials" is an integrated science and English language arts project. Our second-grade students had to chose and create one of the characters of their fable and design a model of that animal using recyclables materials. They also had to write a How-to essay, explaining how they made the characters step-by-step, in detail, and using commands and transition words.

In this project, students also learned the importance of reusing materials to create something new. They used their creativity and fine motor skills to create and build an animal from scratch using recyclables. They also learned how to teach someone to make the characters they made through writing the procedures step-by-step. They created a slide presentation and learned how to add writing and pictures.

Thanks to the commitment of students and the support of families, this project was a success! It benefitted the students because it involved planning, using creativity, developing fine motor skills, writing skills, typing, and computer skills. Students also learn better when they teach others how to make something!
