Pre AP Pre Calculus:
This week we will be looking at the Polar Plane. Navigation of ships is based on the polar coordinate plane instead of the rectangular (or x/y) coordinate plane. For those going on to Calculus, this will be good information!
First, you need to understand how the polar coordinate system works. Print these notes to follow along with Mrs. Brown as she explains Polar Coordinates. Once you have viewed the video, try these for practice. Here is some polar graph paper if you would like to practice a little more. (FIlled in copy of the notes.)
2. Polar Equations
Since points are no longer x and y, the equations to graph figures in the polar plane are also different. To explore more, you will want to print these notes to follow along with Ms. Brown as she explains Polar Equations. . Here are some practice problems: polar equation worksheet (Filled in copy of the notes.)
3. Polar Graphs
There are some really fun shapes that you can create with polar equations on your graphing calculator. Need a TI-84? Here is a tutorial on how to use the TI-84 to graph polar equations. Use your new skills and graph the equations in this packet. Do enough of the graphs to answer the questions. The analysis boxes can be completed by using these notes. (Sample answers to packet.)
The Pre AP Challenge next week will continue with the use of polar equations in regard to complex numbers.
We have come to the end of week 3 in our Continuous Learning Plan. While we miss seeing you in class, we do want you to keep moving forward with your math knowledge! Next week we will be continuing with Polynomial and Rational Functions. Remember: You can contact your teacher at any time via email. If you have questions or just want to hear from us, we would love to connect with you!
