We are embarking on an important journey together this year! I am excited about the opportunity to work with you and alongside you as your children develop essential skills and understandings in the world of mathematics. We will, at times, disagree on how to best accomplish our goals. There will be moments when you don't understand my philosophy or my methods. I will make many mistakes! Through any challenges that lay ahead, I hope you know that I seek to see each child, to understand their concerns, motivations, and individual challenges. I, ultimately, care far more about who each child is becoming, than what they accomplish in my class. I consider it a privilege to work with each of them.

My role as a teacher is to guide my students' learning and discovery through math. Ideally, we can work together at releasing your child to develop academically on their own with the understanding that their progress is not a reflection of your own math or parenting skills. This doesn't mean giving up your role as parent. It simply means respecting the fact that their academic journey is their own. Our children are often in a competitive environment, constantly being sorted based on their ability. This is true in sports, music, and school. My hope is that we do not add to the pressure they already feel when they perform by critiquing them or having reactions that suggest our regard for them is based on their school progress. I would also encourage you to have a conversation with your child about their goals for the middle school year ahead. Listen and ask them to tell you honestly how you can best support them. I do the same, and their answers often surprise and enlighten me!

Understand that your child will go through struggles; that is part of the process.
