Welcome back! I am so excited to spend a second year with you as we explore Geometry! You are a very special group of kids who are motivated, capable, and curious. You are funny, intuitive, and you care about each other as learners and as friends. You have created the best environment for learning and it is a privilege to study math with you!

Geometry in Washington State is a course aligned with the national Common Core Standards. This class is part of a curriculum that emphasizes skills and concepts, but it is balanced with an investigative and small group component in which teamwork serves as a tool in problem solving. You will study and learn the critical elements of geometry which include ideas of congruence, similarity, proof, constructions and trigonometry. Additional ideas include extending to three dimensions, connecting Algebra to Geometry through coordinates, circles with and without coordinates, and applications of probability.

In addition to content, you will be encouraged to develop and consistently apply sound mathematical practices. The eight Standards of Mathematical Practices include making sense of problems and persevering in solving them, reasoning abstractly and quantitatively, constructing viable arguments, and critiquing the reasoning of others. You will also be asked to model with mathematics, use appropriate tools strategically, attend to precision, look for and make use of structure, and look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Successful completion of Geometry will prepare you for Algebra 2, as well as many practical, real-world applications. It will be an exciting year!
