I love teaching math! For me, math is a beautiful expression of our ordered universe. Math helps us live our everyday lives, opens doors for our futures, and improves our qualifications. However, math is much more than that! Mathematics is the practice of discovering and solving problems. In mathematics you must identify relevant information, create models, think strategically, construct arguments, and examine the logic of others. All of this takes hard work and a great deal of knowledge. You will need knowledge of numbers, mathematical structure, problem-solving strategies, and a wide range of mathematical content. My joy in teaching comes from watching you attempt to figure things out…often failing and trying something else, working collaboratively, and thinking carefully. This ability to reason, consider all aspects of a problem, represent ideas in multiple ways, and make connections are valuable no matter where you go in life. That is why I teach math!
Born in Denver, Colorado, I moved to Richland, Washington, where I graduated from Richland High School. During my high school years I worked in a statistics lab for Pacific Northwest Laboratories, as well as in an elementary classroom. I combined these two loves when I chose my direction at the University of Washington. Upon graduation, I was hired as the first 5th/6th grade teacher in what was then the Parent Cooperative Education Program (PCEP) at Martha Lake Elementary. During my time there the PCEP traveled to Madrona and then to Cedar Valley. I fulfilled my principal internship by helping lead the transition of the PCEP to its own building here at Maplewood. Following, I moved to Bozeman, Montana, where I taught 4th and 5th grades. Upon returning to the Puget Sound area I taught at Seaview and Oak Heights, as well as at Maplewood. While my children were growing, I also tutored students in grades K-12 from Edmonds, Northshore, Everett, Snohomish, Stanwood, and Granite Falls school districts. Seven years ago, I returned to Maplewood and I'm so happy to, once again, be working alongside our dedicated families!
My husband, Scott, and I have been married for 31 years. We have 3 (+1) children. Cooper is 25, married to Laney, living and working in Seattle. Nathan, our middle, is 22 and a 2017 graduate from Glacier Peak in Snohomish. He is in New Mexico! Ella, 17, is entering her senior year at Jackson High School in Everett. We love mountains, Montana, dog walking (Wilson), reading, football (Huskies and Seahawks), soccer (Sounders and Ella's Snohomish United), and general adventuring.
